February 5, 200620 yr This was discussed a few months ago. Later on it was said that the tool can create problems. I installed it recently and the shimmering is reduced, but I get odd horizontal black lines drawn across the water. Not a good overall solution for me.There was a long thread posted here previously.I was wondering if others had experience with the tool or some other ATI tweak that would reduce the shimmering.Greg Greg Clark
February 5, 200620 yr Hi Greg,My experience with this 'fix' was, in the main, positive until I got tired of the way the water textures flashed in the 2D Cockpit. I have now removed it and, as a bonus, I do believe the sim is running a little faster again as well.My settings have always been AAx6 and AFx16 (forced) so, arguably I probably didn't really need it to begin with. Still sometimes you have just got to experiment as that search for perfection rolls alone relentlessly ;) No harm done.MikeP4 2.4GHz (400FSB), 1Gig PC2100 DDR Crucial, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (Omega 3.8.205 (6.01) / Catalyst 6.1), SB Audigy (5.12.0001.0443), Hyundai ImageQuest Q17 17" TFT LCD 20ms Monitor (1280x1024x32), Gigabyte GA-8IRXP MoBo, Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 (160GB) + IBM Deskstar 120GXP UDMA100 (40 GB), Ultra-Quiet PSU 400W, Logitech MX1000 Laser Mouse, WinXP Home (SP2), DirectX 9.0c, AGP Aperture = 128MB
February 5, 200620 yr for some reason when I use AAx6 I get more blurries than AAx4. with my ati x850dont know why
February 5, 200620 yr The ATI Alpha channel tweak is no longer necessary. Using ATI Tray Tools one can accomplish the same effect.Click on Tweaks> Advanced Tweaks (after accepting any warning message)> click on the "Current Database" drop down window> New AA and AF methods> UNCHECK "Disable support for High Quality AF" (while there, check "Disable support for Adaptive AA"... this feature is problematic at best.) Now return to the Main Menu for ATI Tray Tools, click on Direct 3D> Settings> and check "Enable High Quality AF".Before using ATI Tray Tools in the above manner one should remove the Alpha channel tweak from last summer. A driver reinstall (including a thorough scrubbing with Drivercleaner) might be required. Cheers,Greg
February 5, 200620 yr Hi Greg,"Before using ATI Tray Tools in the above manner one should remove the Alpha channel tweak from last summer. A driver reinstall (including a thorough scrubbing with Drivercleaner) might be required."....I'm sure all you need to do is remove the 2 files: d3d9.dll and d3d9.ini from Fs9 root folder. In fact all I did was rename both files by adding the extension .bak and that seemed to disable it effectively. So far, I've been a bit shy of playing with ATI Tray Tools as RadLinker still seems to work for me using Omega's 3.8.205 (6.01) driver set. Would you suggest I try opting for 16x Quality (now that I have implemented your tweak in ATT) rather than 16x Forced, and would I lose out with the Trilinear filtering by doing so?Is there a helpful guide to steer folk like me through ATT's many facilities?Cheers,MikeP4 2.4GHz (400FSB), 1Gig PC2100 DDR Crucial, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (Omega 3.8.205 (6.01) / Catalyst 6.1), SB Audigy (5.12.0001.0443), Hyundai ImageQuest Q17 17" TFT LCD 20ms Monitor (1280x1024x32), Gigabyte GA-8IRXP MoBo, Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 (160GB) + IBM Deskstar 120GXP UDMA100 (40 GB), Ultra-Quiet PSU 400W, Logitech MX1000 Laser Mouse, WinXP Home (SP2), DirectX 9.0c, AGP Aperture = 128MB
February 8, 200620 yr Hi Mike, sorry I missed your post.Would you suggest I try opting for 16x Quality (now that I have implemented your tweak in ATT) rather than 16x Forced, and would I lose out with the Trilinear filtering by doing so?Actually, with the 3.8.205's after enabling the AF optimizations I'm able to run the AF in Performance mode. Looks fine to my eyes. I also set Catalyst A.I. to Low.I'm quite pleased with what they've done with the AF optimization algorithms. Gives us nice flexibilty in how we configure the drivers for our preferred IQ. I don't notice any real performance increase, but like you I don't worry about FR's and simply lock at 27. The sim runs very well for me. Now, if only ATI could fix the Adaptive AA we'd be even happier. Is there a helpful guide to steer folk like me through ATT's many facilities? The best I've seen is Ray Adams' thread over at Driverheaven, and that isn't saying much. Clearly he doesn't understand all the variables in ATI's drivers. Evenso, I find his tool very useful. Makes tweaking VC drivers pretty easy (given the limit of understanding folks outside of ATI have of all variables).Try the different modes of AF for yourself. I'd recommend setting Catalyst A.I. to Low, and of course enabling the AF tweaks. Then try the different AF modes to see which of the three you like. We both know that we set our drivers differently, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised once you find the sweet spot for your IQ. ATI Tray Tool offers the flexibilty to get it done.Cheers,Greg
February 8, 200620 yr Hi Greg,Thank you very much! That has been most helpful. :)"The best I've seen is Ray Adams' thread over at Driverheaven, and that isn't saying much. Clearly he doesn't understand all the variables in ATI's drivers."....LOL, I guess it's a case of the blind leading the blind. I often feel like that myself when I respond to some of the posts here at Avsim. Still, it's a great way to learn as you knock ideas around.Cheers,Mike
