August 23, 200619 yr Good afternoon Jim,X1600 pro was my previous video card, since you are on trial basis at the moment please do not commit yourself soon. I think there's something going on with ATI-they might try to surpass the NVIDIA 7950 GX2 (1GB RAM). The price of X1900 XTX(512MB) is dropping here in United Arab Emirates. That's always a sign that something new is coming up. 3 weeks back I bought my X1900 for US$ 630. yesterday I happened to passed by the same shop it drop to US$ 595.Its good to hang on. Please let us know also what you're going to discover.Regards, Isagani
August 23, 200619 yr Author Hi Isagani;Nice to hear from you especially since your're so far away from where I live which is in San Jose, California, USA.Currently I'm now testing the EVGA e-GeForce 7800 GS with 256MB, AGP 8X and DDR3. Price here in the US ranges around $350.00. It was store priced for $329.95 + 8.25% tax along with a $40.00 mail-in rebate. This card to my experience performs much better than the X1600. The sales person was more knowledgable than others I've dealt with and even consulted one of the techs when he didn't know the answer to a question I had. What we came up with is to consider the number of piplines in the card and not worry just about speed of the GPU or the amount of memory contained on the card. The 7800 uses 500 Mhz with 16 pipelines with 256 MB ram while the X1600 has only 12 pipelines but 512 MB of ram. I'll also look at the ATI X800 XL which also seems to match the 7800 in most of the specs.I'll keep you posted.Jimp.s. Just to add performance notes, I maintained a FPS rate of 22-31 as I have mine locked @ 31 FPS and that was not using FSAutostart. So next I'll try it with FSAutostart first.
