ASUS fanless cooling - MoBo & Video

Featured Replies

I searched but couldn't find anything specific.I've been under a rock for the past while and hadn't seen the ASUS fanless cooling now available. I'd like to hear from anyone that's using either of their Mobo or Video cards using this type of cooling.I'm getting fed up with having to replace howling fans and the noise reduction would be welcome. The Mobo that attracts me is ASUS A8N-SLI Premium & any of their video cards, 6600, 7800 or 7950.Thanks,Cal

ASUS has had their fanless A8N series boards for a while. I do not have any experience with them, however. I can say, that when I built my system, I went for a fan setup--I have had no noise problems with fans in the past--and went for tried-and-true. But that's not to say that passive cooling a motherboard chipset isn't perfectly fine. In fact I think that a passive setup on a motherboard chipset is adequate in 90% of applications. The thing is, on most systems, the power supply fan, or case fans, will be the fans you hear above all else. I doubt you will ever notice a chipset fan over the din of the other big fans.RhettAMD 3700+, eVGA 7800GT 256, ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, etc. etc.

Thanks Rhett,Of course you're right. Power supply & case fans are the noisiest and have to be there.I guess I'm just a little miffed that this ASUS 6800GT cooling fan began to howl after only 8 months. Maybe I'm expecting too much from consumer grade equipment, but it's not on 24 hrs a day either. The "fan" is actually a squirrel cage blower set up. All the other fans I can pull out, lift the little specs sticker and put in a drop of oil when they howl. It lasts for months. However, I can't get at the motor in this blower set up.Anyway, my dealer got an RMA and sent it in. He tells me ASUS is having a lot of fan problems. If they'd make those things available, I can change it myself. I want to upgrade and maybe I should consider a video card with the fanless cooling. Thanks again,Cal

I have an Asus A8N32-SLI which is fanless, it works well. Although my case fans are quite loud anyway.Bruce.

I've had several of the A8N series of mb's...The northbridge chipset on the A8N-SLI Premium uses a fanless heatpipe design...It relies on the circulation of the CPU cooler along with the case fans to provide circulation...So you definatly still have to have Fans....I probably have more fans with these fanless mb's than normal..I use the Panasonic Panflo 2750rpm 120mm(45db)=(Loud!!)...he he...Then I always get a big ole aftermarket CPU cooler...Starting-up of one of my computers sounds similar to start-up of an F/A 18 Hornet... :-lol There are companies which do cater to quiet...Scythe fans apparently are geared towards the lower noise arena?? I've never used them...You can add Fan Controllers to any fan...Which will allow you to manually adjust/control fan speed's...This can aid in lowering Db's...I might agree with something like that as long as you keep tab's on temps...In the upper end videocard arena...I have not really noticed a whole lot of "quiet" oriented stuff...Most of the High End Videocards are running on the hotter than normal side of tolerance...Even with the large factory supplied GPU Coolers they come with...I'll consistantly see the upper 70c regime with an ATI X1900XTX card I have...I really don't like that very much...Here is a link to ArticCooling VGA coolers...I've never used one of these...I'm considering one for the X1900 I mentioned..An alternative to the "stock" cooler your having trouble with:http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga1.phpHere is Zalman's web page...They have some nice stuff which I've used in the past...I currently have a VF900 LED which works really well on an nVidia 7800GTX card...and a ZM80D HP on my Old Faithful X-800 AGP card which I love:http://www.zalman.co.kr/usa/product/code_list.asp?code=013Scythe...I've never used any of their stuff...Suppose to be geared towards "Quiet"??:http://www.scythe-usa.com/Have Fun!!

Thanks a million Chuck!Really appreciate what you've steered me to. I'm not really concerned about fan noise -- I could easily reduce what I hear by relocating the two computers I have running most of the time. I was just considering fanless to get away from the inevitable failures and not being able to source after market replacements. I spent a career repairing electronic equipment so I have no qualms about pulling a out fan and oiling it. That's easy. The Artic-cooling looks attractive as a direct replacement for the one that failed. Just have track down a source up here in the Great White North. Of course, the zalman substitutes look attractive too and I've seen something similar hanging on my dealer's wall. I'll have take a better look next time I'm there.I think I will take a good look at the EN7800 as an upgrade. Thanks guys.Cal
