November 15, 200619 yr I decided to update my BIOS yesterday on my Dell XPS Gen2. I had been using the A02 version for about the past 3 years with no problems. I updated to the A06 BIOS and now my computer is faster than ever. Before I could only get about 20fps with autogen off. Now I am able to set water at low 2 xs, and max out all my scenery sliders with 33% road traffic. I have not turned on any air traffic yet and I keep the light bloom effect turned off. I am now able to lock my fps at 25fps. I was told that updating my BIOS would not help very much in FSX. Even when I was only getting 20fps FSX was very smooth. Now the sim still runs very smooth, but with more detail. I also noticed after the update that all my programs load really fast. FRAPS use to take about 10 seconds to start up, but now FRAPS opens instantly. Before My bios update I could only get about 14fps when recording in FSX. Now it drops to about 21fps and looks very smooth. Is it normal to see such an increase in performance when doing this type of upgrade, or could something have been wrong with my computer and the bios upgrade just repaired it? My system specs are as follows: Dell XPS Gen2, P4 3.2GHz, 1 Gig of RAM, Radeon 9800XT, and Win XP Sp2. I am just trying to understand what is going on, so any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
November 15, 200619 yr The BIOS(basic input/output system)...In and of itself...is typically not going to be responsable for an increase in performance...It is very basic code...Where I suspect you *could* gain an advantage is..An updated bios may allow/support later generation drivers ect...With those able to function correctly...I could see an oportunity for increased performance...As an example...My first Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard was a very early one...It had a ver 1.00 bios...With that configuration I could not even run a x2 processor...A later bios was required along with later chipset drivers...I have a habit of keeping up to date bios and chipset drivers...Typically I will do such maintenence during a major component upgrade..Glad your machine is running better!!Have Fun...

November 17, 200619 yr Be sure to consult your mb manuel before attempting to flash your bios...I's recommend following their directions to a tee!!I'm not very familiar with Gigabyte boards...But here is a link to their bois selection section: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherb.../BIOS_List.aspx
