Superb results in FS9 after selective hardware upgrades

Featured Replies

A couple of months after I doubled the RAM to 2GB and changed the video card to an eVGA 7900 GTO (512 RAM), I can state unequivocally that my DELL XPS Gen 4 runs FS9 better than ever before and better than I had hoped for.I can now run the PMDG 747-400 in Virtual Cockpit mode all the time on two horizontally spanned large LCD monitors (I am upgrading to MATROX Triplehead next week with a third LCD screen), with most settings pushed right, heavy t-storms with massive CB clouds everywhere, an average of 33% UT AI traffic, and various add-ons such as Flight Environment and Ground Environment. The results are breathtaking. The only stutters are micro stutters into dense US or European airports with a lot of traffic and the stutters are transient with frames and fluidity generally remaining very decent in the VC all the way to touchdown. For less complex aircraft such as the default FS9 aircraft, Milton's various props (which are amazing!), and other great props, and various jets, FS9 just runs without a hitch or hiccup all the time. It's relentlessly good and smooth. This is how it was supposed to be!Everything loads faster and displays in all views load quicker too and look better as well. It is hugely gratifying that this is the outcome for it represents the zenith of my FS career after about 8-9 years of trying to get as close to reality on a desktop PC as possible.I did admittedly start with a processor of 3.80Ghz, but it seems that if FS is not processor bound, you still need a huge video card to make it run really nicely and you also need a lot of RAM to push the brain to work better as well.So for anybody still in FS9-land, considering an upgrade to make FS9 run better, increase your RAM and invest in a good video card because this is very much worthwhile. I have no plans to migrate to FSX in the near future because I don't plan to buy a new PC, nor do I plan to repeat all of the myriad, time consuming tweaks and add-on installations (about $500 worth) I've done in FS9. I am well aware that FSX is fabulous 'cos I've tried it, but if I never migrate to another generation of FS, I will be completely satisfied with what I have now and for years to come.Cheers,JS

Dell XPS Gen 4, Pentium IV Northwood extreme 3.8Ghz, 3Ghz RAM, eVGA 7900 GTO,

CH throttle quadrant, 42" LG LED, 24" DELL LCD, Windows XP, FS2004, FSUIPC 3.96

FS Autostart 1.1 (Build 11), FS Navigator 4.6, UT, FE, GE, REX, PMDG, Level-D, PSS, etc.

That sounds like a great system JS. Be sure to post a pic when you get the full TH2GO implemented.Although just about all the posts here about the TH2GO have been about using it for out of the window views (with the VC or 2D panel), I came across a cockpit builder site in which the TH2GO was to be used to drive 3 monitors for panel displays. Hadn't thought of that.--Bryn
