January 14, 200719 yr Hello all :-) First thing first my name is Alain, 43 years young ;) and i live on south shore of Montreal. My system specs are:HP Pavilion a1654nIntel Core Duo E63002 gb ram PC533 DDR22x 250g WD SATA2 driveEnermax 535w psATI X1900XT 512mbHP f2105 lcdSaitek X52This system runs FS9 very well at 20 locked fps at 1680x1050 and FSX not so baddly with almost every settings to the right.i take the time to stop every thing unnecessery before starting sim, i also use ASV6 and Radar contact, GE pro, My traffic etc.Now with my "problem":I noticed that close to landing, approx 20 miles in FSX and with runway in sight on FS9 on busy airports and/or dense scenery, sim CTD with an out of memory message}( At one point in FSX, the "om" stated a video memory problem; since i have a 512mb card, i could only think the settings were too high, so i went down one notch from full complexity and down to very dense on autogen, restarted the flight, everything went well, altough quite low 9-10 fps as one can expect in FSX:P the same approach was made to FS9 with the same results, no more CTD:D So now, after i tought (and told my wife...) my system would hold it's own for a while, here i am seeking advices for upgrade, would going to 3gb of ram help or if 2gb of faster ram (like 800mhz) would give the most benefit and finally, does a E6700 proc would boost fps enought to justify price ?Thanks!
January 24, 200719 yr Hi Alain. With the rig you're running i think there's only few who has advices. You should be running fsx very good. There should be no lack of memery, but try and check your virtual mem, and if you know how, try get 100mb virtual mem on the main drive for security, and make full virtual on the second drive. It might speed up a little.Tho, you should not have any problems.Cheers
January 24, 200719 yr I've run FS9 on much lesser computers and never had an OOM CTD, even on the highest settings. Whilst my current rig runs FS9 beautifully and chokes up on FSX (running both at with 4X/8X AA/AF and 3360x1050 res :-)), it too has never had an OOM CTD, even when I had "only" 2G RAM in it. As such, I don't think either RAM qty or CPU speed is the issue and I'd look at virtual memory settings as suggested above. My suggestion would be to let XP manage virtual memory.Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
January 24, 200719 yr SalutI second and third what the others said. Your sys should run it fine. I'd check to make sure I wasn't running out of virtual memory first. If that doesn't work we can try other things...RhettAMD 3700+ (@2310 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 2.5-3-3-8 (1T), WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian case Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
