THTG vs Horizontal Span Mode

Featured Replies

Nvidia's XP drivers have a "Horizontal Span Mode." This allows a user to stretch the desktop across numerous monitors. It provides a single horizontal resolution equal to:Monitor 1's horizontal res + Monitor 2's hr + Monitor 3's hr + etc, by__ the minimum Vertical resolution of the monitor set. This is not the "Extend my desktop to this monitor" function. This is called "Horizontal Span mode" and it sounds just like the THTG function. The Nvidia/Vista Control panel help index describes this function is not available with Vista. I'd try it myself, but I don't have an Nvidia/XP set.Has anyone tried this?

Yes, but the Horizontal Span will only work across a single Graphics card ie you can only span 2 monitors. So if you have 2 monitors and an nVidia card then there is no need for a TH2Go. However if you wish to span across 3 monitors then you will need a TH2Go or if you have an ATI card (unless something has changed) they do not support Horizontal Span.RegardsJim

ATI cards now support it, too. The main difference is that the spanning is centred so you find that gauges etc can be split by the monitor bezels - as I understand TH2G, you can adjust the view so this doesn't happen.I tried it with my two monitors and Radeon card the other day, out of interest, and apart from the shockingly low res, the attitude indicator was split across two monitors in normal forward view, making it unuseable.Others may know tricks to deal with this issue or there may be Nidia tools available to do so.Looked kinda cool though :-)Andrew

My Nvidia (Vista) Control Panel properties screen acknowledged the 3rd and 4th monitor from a second Vcard. I found XP's Span Mode was not available in Vista so I took the setup down. The Nvidia's XP version provides a "Dual View" function for 2 monitors plugged into the same card. I agree this additional "Horizontal Span Mode" that Nvidia's XP driver provides should also be use-able with 2 monitors plugged into the same card. However, if the 3rd and 4th monitors (from that 2nd Vcard) are acknowledged in Nvidia's XP Control Panel, might the "Horizontal Span Mode" provide a THTG 'span-like' function not just across 2 monitors, but across 3 or 4 monitors? It'll take XP, a second Vcard and at least 3 monitors to try this out.

You can have two separate spans across the 4 monitors but you cannot have a single span across 3or4 monitorsRegardsJim

I use horizontal span mode the majority of my flight time with both FS9 and FSX in VC mode using two monitors and TrackIR. Since I am in VC mode, I just calibrate the TrackIR center view point to split the instrument panel at a convenient vertical line (ie. so gauges aren't split) and horizontally depending on my phase of flight (more head down for take off and landings).Because I am using widescreen LCDs, I get a slightly lower total span of a TH2G setup (3360x105 mine versus 3840x1024 of TH2G). My 7900 video card is more than enough for FS9's light graphics load and it usually doesn't make any difference FPS-wise whether I run spanned or single monitor. FSX is a bit more graphically intensive, but dropping back to single screen usually only boosts my FPS by 10% at most, so my video card is pretty well up to the task.As I have said here before, if money was no object then a TH2G solution is the better one, as it also alleviates the split center screen issue with dual displays. Being a frugal bugger, I was happy to save the couple of hundred bucks over one less screen and no TH2G unit and just deal with the split screen issue (cocking head ever so slightly on final works wonders!).As others have already said, if you want 3+ monitors, then TH2G is the only way to go.Gary

I'm trying to get horizontal span to a point where it's usable for me in FSX. I use the right screen as my main, and the left as the side for peripheral and extra panels. I also have TrackIR 4.I tried cocking my head and looking left to center the screen properly, but it was a hassle, and I had to recenter during flight it was all thrown off again. I would like a permanent solution to getting this working well.Tonight, I will try some panel adjustments that were suggested in another thread titled something like "multimonitor setup help".Does anyone have any ideas how to get it working easily? If not, I might have to forgo having the horizon on both screens or force myself to get used to having the bezel in the middle of my view, bleh. Thanks in advance!Steve

Unfortunately Jim is very right! :-)I am running three 20" NEC's on two cards and can't even use TH2G as their native resolutions are still limited. So I spanned, as Jim explained, only on two monitors and have the third one as a single one. Still great, but not yet perfect.Best regards, Sam

You could still use the TH2Go, it would just mean scaling the 1280x1024 for each monitor to the 1600x1200 native resolution of your panels

Hmmm... as I read in various threads maximum resolution for TH2G still is 1280x1024... are you recommending somekind of a workaround? Thanks, Sam
