Overclock newbie need help (Q6600 with P5N32E SLi)

Hello everyone,Just got my new computer to replace by P4 2.8. I follow some online overclock guide for my motherboard and able to OC the FSB to 342 with highest multiplier 9 (3.08G). Stable when inside window. But take abnormal long time to restart, shutdown is fine.I tried OC at 3.15 (FSD350, DDR 800), both CPU and memory check and pass in POST. But freeze when entering Windows and need restart. Another time CPU speed pass, but cannot make memory test; require reset BIOS.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/175964.jpgAlso tried OC at 3.26 (FSD362, DDR 800), it freeze in POST screen without reading the CPU or the memory. Require reset BIOS.My target OC is FSB 380 with multiplier 9 (3.42G), leave my memory at DDR 800.Another finding is, no matter how high I set the Vcore Volt., it lock at about 1.34 (I observe it in BIOS monitor). May this limit my rooms to go faster? or do I set too high the volt for both Vcore and memory which stop they work when OC??I am wondering what's limiting my overclocking. The memory? the power supply? my volts setting in BIOS? or the CPU itself (such low OC capacity??)Default volt settinghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/175957.jpgVolt setting OC at 3.08 (FSD 342; DDR 800)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/175958.jpgActual volt output OC 3.08http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/175959.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/175963.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/175960.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/175961.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/175962.jpgEnclose the technical specification of my system. Nice write up.I think 3.1 on a quad is plenty! They run very very hot, did you take any temp reading under load. I bet your close to 65-70C?The reset problem is interesting, I have the same on a GO 6750, I can power down but I can't reset it just hangs instead of posting. Even if I Ctrl-Alt-Del in the bios same issue. How about yours?I got my 6750 to 3.2Ghz, 400x8, thats the limit, but its plenty fast. Have fun with your quad.

I do think there is more rooms to go for th Q6600. Just I do not get the know-how yet since I am new to overclocking. When OC 3.08,the CPU temperature (with stock HSF), the idle temp sit around 4x. Typical working range sometimes go to 5x.The core0 get to 61 when running FSX. The core 1 sit around 5x. The other two stay in 4x range.Perhaps I need to set something in FSX to make it "further" utilize the multi-core usage.Alkit

Someone (extreme OCer) already OC the 6850 to 5G. Is hard to comment the potiential. Also, that OC power some with a cost of many other "cooling addon"

UPDATEI know what's limit my OC after some more try. That's the Vcore I set in BIOS. Just update the BIOS to latest 1203.GOOD NEWS:I bump more power to Vcore 1.375 for 3.15G (FSB 350). It works fine but getting hot. Room temperature is about 29-30 (no air conditioner turn on, window all closed). When idle in Vista, Core 0 & 1 stay at top 50 and sometimes 61, 62. Core 2 & 3 stay cooler at 51-52. Normally when i am in the room, I will turn on the air-conditioner and set 24c.PROBLEM:I then give it an aggressive try to bump more power to Vcore for FSB 400, both CPU and memory boots well and showing good in POST page, however it doesn't load into window. It does not even show the loading bar and hangs there as black screen. Anyone can give me an advice for what to do please???Thank youWill try flying FSX by new 3.15G power tonight.Alkit

Run this to make sure your ram is OK.http://www.memtest.org/If it's OK, Go into your bios and re-set your DDR2-800 ram to run at (a much slower) DDR2-533 or 667. Slow the ram down so you can eliminate it as a possible cause. Now run this program to check your system for stability: Orthos (AKA, "Prime 95")http://sp2004.fre3.com/If the system is not stable, Orthos will show faults within 5-10 minutes. Watch your temps, but the CPU is designed to run at 71C, forever. If the CPU goes to 72C, it will automatically de-clock itself to 2.4Ghz. You cannot hurt this CPU. It will not let you. If Orthos runs OK for 10 minutes, turn up your FSB (CPU speed) a bit more. Do NoT change your ram's speed, yet. Leave the ram "slowed down," for now. Play with your voltages (you'll need 680i, Nvidia guys to help with that). Keep turning up the FSB until: 1) You get faults in Orthos 2) or a CPU temp of 71C . . . which ever comes first. Then turn the FSB down a bit and run Orthos overnight. That's your Max CPU clock. Take a break. You done good.Rested? Ready for step two? Now, start increasing the ram's speed. Same drill. Run Orthos at each speed increase, etc.Other than messing with voltages and (maybe) gettin' a fancy new CPU cooler, that's all there is to it. Update: The 680i may be having problems with the Q6600s, here:http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=86521&...e=1&key=?

Hi Sam,Thank you for the suggestion. I have done a 15 mins to my OC 3.28 by the Prime94. No faults or error msg. BUT it get my CPU really hot!!! I m not sure if the CoreTemp works well, the first two cores keep above 70. The Asus include software shows CPU temp at 67 to 70. It is way hotter than when it runs FSX.OC 3.28FSB 366, Vc 1.4vDDR 800 1.9vMem. timing 5-5-5-12Enclose a screenshot, still some way to go for my target FSB 377 (3.4)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/175979.jpgWhen I increase FSB further, both CPU and ram shows good in POST, but it does not able to load Windows. There is one time when I reboot, it get me into Window boot option page (counting down), but my wireless keyboard become no power, I believe the receive has very low power at that time. As I can see its light signal become very weak. It works perfectly normal when entered window or in BIOS. The computer was working good as it was counting down. Anyone know what cause this problem? Is anywhere I should increase the voltage??Thank you very much!!Alkit

You mentioned now 2 things I've seen:1) Reset issues, but power down fine2) Keyboard issues, a couple times my kb was not detected on boot. What Power Supply are you using, I have a Phantom 500, it has 2 12V 18A rails but I'm wondering if I need to go to a 3-4 rail PSU, I think o/c these chips with a 8800 video card really taxes the system?

As it sits, you've arrived. The Core95 temps are 15 degrees below the actual temps. There's a "Tjunction offset" you can set in Core95's options menu to get the temps to read correctly . . . or just add 15 degrees. You are at the 70 degree mark and the O/C ends here. Nothing will help . . . except to get the temps down so you can go some more. If you want to play, take off the heatsink and "lap" it. You have 4-5 degree splits between core sets. That means one set is being cooled better than the other set (so this super-tweaker theory goes!). Once you get the heat sink off, clean it off. Now set a piece of 400 grit sandpaper on a nice flat surface and rub the heatsink's contact area around on the paper a couple or times. See an area that did not get sanded? That's a low spot. Keep sanding till the whole contact area looks like it is sanded. Now get some 1000 grit paper and do it some more. Now 6000 grit. Make it shine like a mirror. Now apply just a bit of thermal paste. See that post above. S/he has instruction about how to apply the paste. It's important or you'll get hot spots (like you are getting now). It's hotter with Orthos than FS because you are running all 4 cores with Orthos. This is the way you dial-in a bulletproof overclock. Gotta get it your system stable with with all 4 cores maxed out. Then you'll have a friend for life. My P4-2.8 has been running "maxed-out" at 3.2 for years. It's been a good friend. Power? The GO power requirement was reduced. That's the main change to the GO. INTC decreased the power requirement from 105 watts to 95 watts. At any given clock, the GO will use less power . . . that's why we might be able to get a bit more from it. But I entirely agree. The PS is still a CriTiCal component. What's cha got?

Just a note on using Orthos is that it only runs two instances of prime95 maximum and is therefore only useful for stressing out single or dual core CPUs. To stress all four cores, you need to run Prime95 itself four times and I believe you have to tweak the command line for each to make sure it runs a specific core. The easiset way to tell if all four cores are firing is to use windows task manager and after a few minutes it feels like someone has turned on a space heater in your computer room ;-)Gary

Hi Sam,You make me think of a potiental problem that block my way beyond 3.28.Let me explain and see if this is the case,Now the highest workable (able to get into Windows) OC to me is 3.28 (FSB 366). I can set BIOS by giving more Vcore volts and set higher FSB. Anything speed higher than FSB 366, they will pass the POST page without a problem. Then it shows the window loading bar and load, after a while of loading. The HDD light goes off and it hangs there.Symptom:I set FSB 377 for OC 3.4. It passed the POST and begin to load windows. After loading about 10 seconds, it stops and freeze.May it caused by the over temperature of the CPU and it hangs itself?Or is it a problem of underpower of my 600w power supply? (or wrong setting)Thank youAlkit
