September 23, 200718 yr Hi All,For those of you with NVIDIA cards who are unaware of this resource, I came across the following link from one of our fellow simmers at the Level-D support forum. He said "I have found this http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_fsx_techtips.html to be absolutely huge!!!"Well, I applied the settings recommended at this link and I was blown away. I've been flying for a week now using these recommended settings (well, actually tweaked a bit to allow more traffic and complexity). I have no blurries now. Absolutely, positively, none, no matter what aircraft I fly. In my opinion these nzone recommendations are invaluable.I hope this helps some of you!-Rick----------- My System -----------P4 @ 2.53 GHz / 1GB RAM / NVIDIA GeForce 6800XT, 256MB / Windows XP Home
September 23, 200718 yr Interesting link, Rick. I would figure that any FSX sim pilot would be able to apply those settings, just replace HIGH END, MEDIUM, and LOW END card for the Nvidia brand names.I would certainly suggest tweaking some of those settings, but if you're looking for a place to start, it's not bad. Of course, the best place to start is to turn everything down, and then turn things on one at a time and gradually, but that takes a long time to work through. Jeff ShylukSenior Staff Reviewer, Avsim
September 23, 200718 yr This is a good place to start, thanks for the Nvidia link.I do have a question about one of Nvidia's recommended settings though.Nvidia suggests to set the target frame rate limit at "unlimited", but in contrast ACES always recommends you lock the frame rate by setting a limit. Which is the better advice? A limit or unlimited?
September 23, 200718 yr There are far to many variables to follow a prescribed list of settings...I think a better policy is to put everything to max and then slowly reduce the settings of the things you don't mind losing first, until you reach a frame rate you happy (or can put up) with. I only have a 7600gt but there is no way I could run with some of the 'low' setting they recommend.I personally use a limited rate of 25 - which keeps things solid, no wildly varying ups and downs and more chance of the terrain keeping up.
September 23, 200718 yr I don't have the expertise to give a definitive answer to your question, but let me offer a few thoughts:1. I would think the NVIDIA folks are more knowlegeable regarding the capabilities and limitations of their graphic cards than anyone else. I would tend, therefore, to defer to their expertise. However, their recommendations certainly do not necessarily apply to other brands or models of cards.2. I had previously had my frame rates locked at 20. I set it to unlimited as suggested and have experienced no problems with that setting used in conjunction with the other settings they recommend. It all seems to be a sort of a balancing act of having the right combination of settings so as not to overtax the GPU.3. You have nothing to lose by giving their settings a try. Save your current settings, then set up NVIDIA's recommended ones. If they help, great! If they don't, you can always revert back to your previously saved settings.Good luck!-Rick----------- My System -----------P4 @ 2.53 GHz / 1GB RAM / NVIDIA GeForce 6800XT, 256MB / Windows XP Home
September 24, 200718 yr These are game settings, not card settings, how would they know whats best for each individual computer? I use settings that make my machine run FSX flawlessly, and most dont match theirs.
September 24, 200718 yr Exactly, and since the gpu makes little difference with fsx at this stage, how can all of those settings be gpu dependent as it looks in the article?
September 24, 200718 yr I've been experimenting with both and find that when set at unlimited I get higher framerates on the low end. Have no idea why. Sure helps when using an aircraft like the Level-D 767.
October 1, 200718 yr I notice that the recommendation for AI is an incredibly small 7% if you (like me) are into the likes of PMDG & LevelD large jets and busy high detail airports. Guess I will be sticking with FS9 for some time yet.Bruceb Bruce Bartlett Frodo: "I wish none of this had happened." October 1, 200718 yr Forget their recommendation. It depends entirely on your machine. There is no way they can make blanket recommendations with the thousands of machines out there all behaving differently. I've got AI set to 50% with no problem. And that's flying the Level D 767. Craig
October 3, 200718 yr Hi CraigAt what FPS and what manner of system allows you to achieve this in FSX and can it be achieved at say a 3rd party EGLL with a bit of weather thrown in? I'm only just able to achieve 20FPS with the Level D 767 st complex airports and 50% AI in FS9 (AMD 3700+). Bruceb Bruce Bartlett Frodo: "I wish none of this had happened." October 3, 200718 yr Bruce, Previously running an AMD64 3700. Here is the new system. Kept the vid card till (if ever) DX10 is up and running.
