3 GB of RAM

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!Just got my new PC (never get tired of saying that ;)) and everything is great. Except for one thing : I got 3 GB of RAM and it came as 3 x 1 GB sticks (contrary to the advice I got on the forum, the guy in the shop said that it wouldn't affect performance and since I wasn't the one paying, I didn't really put up a fight). And now, when I bring up the System screen in the Control Panel, it lists me as having only 2 GB. As I said, I was told here that is was better to have 2 x 1 GB sticks and 2 x 512 MB sticks, for dual-channel operation (or something like that). Is it possible that not having that is the cause of XP not seeing the last GB?Thanks for any opinions!Matti

I have 2x512MB and 2x 1GB's from Crucial. I have my two 512's in the B channel and my 2 1GB's in the A channelI seem to be getting premium performance with this memory setup as per my FPS performance in FS9.I show my full 3 Gigs of RAM.You need to have matched sets in BOTH your A and B channels. That is what is happening. You have to remove one GB and have it replaced with 2x512's in one of your channels. That will correct things.Dell XPS Gen3 3.4 GHz.Mitch

I know! I greatly appreciated your suggestions but, as I said in the opening post, I didn't pay for the PC and my dad didn't want to "complicate things" unnecessarily, so my relay of the idea was ignored. The seller also said that it wouldn't affect anything.I'll check their hotline and maybe they'll offer us an extra stick or something.Matti

When fault finding memory on my son's system, at one stage we had 2x512MB and a single 1GB stick for a total of 2GB, and that was detected fine. In that case, the BIOS reported 2GB mixed (or something like that) instead of the usual 2GB dual channel.Does your system show 3GB at POST?Gary

Hi!Sorry for the long time. Anyway, I ventured into BIOS to investigate and found nothing of interest. Maybe I didn't look properly. I then phoned the shop's 2 dollar-a-minute hotline and the guy said that it was probably a faulty stick. He suggested we try the sticks one by one and that if we found the culprit, they would replace it.The system doesn't really show anything at startup, nothing about RAM anyway. Thanks for your ideas!Matti
