RAID 0 makes a difference

Featured Replies

Based mainly on my experience with Photoshop, I have always been a little sceptical about the real-world benefits of RAID 0. But as I have added more and more add-ons to FSX I have found the load times getting longer and longer. Admittedly I now have quite a lot of scenery etc, which is bound to take a little while to load; but I wondered whether I should think again about the use of RAID.I have therefore re-configured 2 of my SCSI drives for RAID 0. The difference is quite noticeable. Here are the numbers, to give an impression:Hardware etc (so far as relevant): 2 x 15k RPM 76Gb SCSI Seagates; 1 x Adaptec 39320A-R HOSTRaid controller card; Vista Ultimate 64(1) Time to load FSX up to start menu: BEFORE (no RAID): 2 minutes 57 secondsAFTER (RAID 0): 2 minutes 21 secondsMore significantly, I think:(2) Time to load start-up flight from start menu (Heathrow Gate 404 with a Level-D 767 and FEX): BEFORE (no RAID): 34 secondsAFTER (RAID 0): 15 seconds.FSX settings are the same both before and after and I can post them if anyone wants to see them, but I don't think the details matter for the sake of seeing the difference RAID 0 has made.I have also noticed much faster loading of textures while running the application. I suppose it might be placebo effect, but my sense is that the application is also generally "snappier" in many respects, such as changing views and accessing menus etc.All in all I am pleased by the difference this has made. For anyone else toying with the idea of a RAID 0 setup, I can recommend it.Tim Morshead
