Anyone else had this happen with the 8800GT?

Featured Replies

Last week I was testing overclock settings on my 8800GT, (with fan speed included), and I went into FSX and it crashed after an extended period within my flight. I reset the clock speed to a more moderate overclock (which I had saved), and went back into FS. Since then, I have seen a pretty nice increase in performance/framerates, almost as if the 'crash' helped (freed-up) my overall performance afterwards.Just thought this was interesting, and not something I have ever encountered with an ATI chipped card.

This is what people usually call placebo effect :-)

I'm not so sure, as I have FSUIPC with the auto saving feature turned on, so I went back to the flight (which crashed), under the same conditions, and my FR's were defiantly higher, and seem to be since it happed 'across the board'......but what the heck, I've seen a performance increase, and that is all that matters I guess. ;)

You simply hit your temp ceiling. Forget about overclocking the 8800GT with the stock cooler. check your temps. I ripped off the stock cooler and put a DuOrb and 34C instead of 62C (no load).

I'm running the stock fan at a straight 75% with RivaTuner within FSX, which seems to be fine, but I guess I just cranked it up a tad too much. I'm still overclocking it, but at a slightly more conservative setting, and have had no problems with many hours on that configuration, before, or after, the 'crash'. I also set RivaTuner to run the fan at a higher setting while 'at idle', as it sure seems like this card runs hot, yet many folks don't seem to worry about it. At idle it seems I can keep it closer to about 45-50C, but will get up around 60-70 inside FS. I've heard some folks running this card close to 100C while gaming without adverse effects...just does not seem right to me.But yes, I may look into a 3rd party cooler.

I have an eVGA 8800GTS 640 MB card and have overclocked it by 32%but frankly, I see no difference in FSX-SP2 performance betweenthe 32% overclock and the default clock speeds. Also, I have experienced CTD's and BSOD's periodically when usingthe overclocked profile so now I just leave it at default.YMMV. I have to agree, to a point. I have found (whether it is this 8800GT or my earlier ATI cards) that lower overclock settings very often provide better performance in FS (9 or X), not less. It is always a matter of trying to find a particular cards 'sweet spot'.So far, I have found my best set-up to be 650MHz Core, 1625MHz Shader, and 975MHz Memory. Not a drastic overclock, but one that does provide a bit of a boost over the defaults.
