Too many shimmers

Featured Replies

Hello all,In FSX, I can peacefully run it on Ultra High settings with bloom and all options checked with a comfy framerate of 35+. But I am getting too many shimmers in the distance, especially over water. I don't have nHancer and do not feel safe using it. Suggestions?Regards,BoeingGuy

1) emmmm....why do you not feel safe using nHancer? It is perfectly harmless.2) My guess is you are using DX10 Preview? Which IMHO is a shimmering mess in FSX . ESPECIALLY THE WATER (which nHancer has a minimal affect on). It was called DX10 Preview for a reason. I get far superior graphics quality running DX9. So, I don't get to use bloom however overall the FSX enviroment looks way better in DX9 compared to DX10 Preview and I get much better framerates under DX9.3) Either way DX9 or DX10 Preview the best way (and the only way I know of to date) to effectively reduce shimmering in FSX with an Nvidia card is to utilize nHancer to configure your graphics driver. Settings will be available to you via nHancer that are not available via the Nvidia Control Panel.

I am unsure of DX10 Preview or DX 9. I know DX9 has more reflections like DX10 (the water doesn't reflect the plane in DX10), but DX10 just looks better. But I can use Bloom with every single slider to the right (including traffic) under DX 9 in Denver with a steady 25+ FPS. So nHancer won't harm any other graphics settings? Also, I don't want to set the options so high (like the guide I'm using tells me) that my performance goes to 5 FPS.Thank you,BoeingGuy

Configuring my graphics driver via nHancer had zero effect on my framerates and a HUGE effect on graphic quality. With your rig you should not see any performance decrease.I'm not sure as to what you mean by "will not harm any other graphics settings"?The only thing nHancer is used for is to enhance the settings of your Nvidia graphics driver. It has nothing to due with FSX graphics settings (although I leave AA and AF on within FSX in conjunction with my nHancer settings). Also, I'm curious as to what guide you are using?

I'm using this: http://forum.justflight.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=26999 Is this good?As for the graphics settings, I meant it shouldn't alter my old NVIDIA control panel settings, but I guess nHancer is better anyways. The guide says to turn AA off in the game and set filtering to Trilinear. Thanks very much!BoeingGuy

The guide is not good if you are running SP2. The talked about tweaks were for SP1 and they DO NOT apply to SP2. Do not make any changes to your fsx.cfg file. You are going to use nHancer to adjust ALL of your Nvidia settings. You will not make the adjustments via the Nvidia Control Panel. nHancer will be your new Nvidia control panel per say. On my system running Vista and FSX under DX9 I use the following settings (with your hardware you should be able to do the same):1) Within FSX Enable AA and AF (if you wish you can turn AF off and try trilinear. On my sytem I get less shimmer leaving it enabled in FSX). When done exit FSX.2) Download the latest version of nHancer v2.3.2 from www.nhancer.com, Install nHancer, Start nHancer and disable the exsisting FSX profile. Make a new profile for FSX.3) With your new profile for FSX highlighted (selected) make the following settings to the FSX profile: a. Enabel Antialiasing, check supersampling, and set to 8xS, check enhance in game setting, check gamma correction, check super- transparency AA. b. Enable Ansiotropic filtering, and set to 16x c. Vertical Synch, set to ON if you are using an LCD d. Enable texture filtering and set to high quality e. Trilinear Optimization, OFF f. Ansio Sample Optimization, OFF g. Enable Negative LOD bias and set to CLAMP4) Now choose the global setting for nhancer (upper right hand corner) and set the following: a. Enabel Antialiasing, check supersampling, and set to 8xS, check enhance in game setting, check gamma correction, check super- transparency AA. You must make this setting globally also to get 8xS supersampling to work in FSX with the latest Nvidia drivers.5) If you are using an LCD lock your framerate in FSX to 30 or 31 FPS.[/i]Locking the framerate in conjunction with Vsync being enabled will eliminate tearing.[/i]
