DX10 Preview, Vista, Nvidia Video Card Problem

Featured Replies

Hi all!I have been reading various posts regarding the "z-buffer problem" people have been encountering with Subject. I am one of those unfortunate souls who has this problem too but not at every airport which I find strange. Frustrating to say the least. It seems to me it should be happening everywhere but I can't find anything wrong at KLAX, KSFO, or KSEA. Yet, at KHHR, the airport next to KLAX, the problem really shows. It looks really bad at KSAN and Friday's Harbor (KFHR) too. So I'm wondering if the problem isn't being caused by something else -- the airport AFCAD elevation for instance? In any case, I think us Nvidia video card owners need to unite and attack this problem systematically and let Nvidia know what the problem we are encountering by sending a bug report using their bug reporting tool. Maybe then we can get some action and maybe a fix to this problem. I don't think we need to report every airport we see this problem. If we can all agree that it's happening at Friday's Harbor, the default flight location, they'll be able to see the problem and maybe come up with a solution. Here's the link to the Vista Quality Assurance site: http://www.nvidia.com/object/vistaqualityassurance.htmlHere's is what you'll be asked in the bug report. I have placed a suggested statement for the "Description of Problem". If we can get several individuals to report this problem and be consistent in the description of the problem, I think we might get some action. If you are encountering another problem with your Nvidia card, I recommend you submit another bug report separately.(I'm showing only Mandatory questions that must be answered):2. Email address:3. Is it ok if we contact you via email for more information? Select Yes4 Operating System Vista 32 bit (I have the 32 bit) Vista 64 bit5. GPU Series: GE Force Series 8 (I have the 8800) GE Force Series 7 GE Force Series 6 GE Force Series FX7. Do you have two GPUs in NVIDIA SLI Mode? Yes (This is Yes for me) No8. NVIDIA graphics driver version: (You'll be presented with a long list of driver versions, the highest being the beta 169.28 drivers) I have the 169.25 WHQL version).Problem Information16. Type of Problem: (You'll be provided with several options. I recommend everyone indicate "3d Application/Game" (Installation and setup; Operating System; Performance; Image quality; Nvidia Control Panel; or Localization are other options). I think it should be 3d Application since DX10 Preview is a 3d Application for FSX.17. Application/game: FSX18. Application version/patch: SP2 (DX10 Preview only exists in this version)19. Description of problem: When DX10 Preview is turned on in the FSX settings, runway and taxiway lines are flashing and taxiways flash when crossing runways. If DX10 Preview is turned off, the problem goes away. It can be seen when you start the default flight at Friday's Harbor (KFHR). It is believed to be a "z-buffer" problem with the video card. Microsoft developers have indicated this is a video card problem and not a problem with FSX. ATI users do not have this problem. Finally, you get to click the Submit button.Hope everyone agrees and submits a bug report. We need to spread the word to other NVIDIA card owners having this problem. I'm going to hold off until I get a consensus to the above report. I plan on reporting this problem in any case. I hope you will too.Best regards,Jim

Already done that a few months ago :-D.But I sure encourage more people to post, usually it helps to be vocal if you want a problem to be recognized. Those guys are in the market to make money (as everyone else, and nothing wrong with that, on the contrary) and they have to decide what is worth fixing, and what is not. If we say : FSX DX10 preview is not worth it - no one will ever listen.I am not sure posting in NVIDIAs forums is really helpfull - but official bug reports are monitored and counted ....Jan

Thanks Jan for your comments. Even if you did report this problem several months ago, it's still not fixed and I strongly suggest you report it again. Like I said, if we get a lot of bugs reports submitted at one time, maybe NVIDIA will listen and look at the problem. I don't think posting on NVIDIA's forums are helpful either. I did see some resolution of the "Display Driver stopped responding" problem when several individuals, including me, uploaded their error report to the SLI forum so NVIDIA techs could take a look at it. Jim

Ive been reporting this and other DX10 FSX problems to Nv every new driver release since Acceleration hit 5 months ago....Add to that that PT has said that Aces have told Nv about these problems a number of times and the ball is in there court for fixing themIMO The only thing that gets NV attention to driver bugs is Bad press(just look how fast they jump on the crysis demo water rendering bug)so untill someone at a major FS website does a DX10 ATI v Nv image comparison i dout they act on it Infact rather than reporting the error to them yet again i think im better off emailing a few of the larger hardware sites explaining the errors and getting them to splash it over there front pages, there a quite a few who love to rub Nv's noses in this kind of thing....i think its time to rock the boat as they had far to long to fix it now they need a good kick in the pants

Gizmo,Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.Jim

Hi Jim,I also have reported this issue on a number of occasions and haven't received any response. I've resubmitted the issue following your guidelines above. Let's hope they look at the reports.Regards,Jim Karn

"also have reported this issue on a number of occasions and haven't received any response. I've resubmitted the issue following your guidelines above. Let's hope they look at the reports."That's great Jim. I'm glad you resubmitted. We may have to do this on a monthly basis until we get their attention. On the FSX Forum I kindly asked Phil Taylor or one of his associates to get involved too and contact Nvidia. Best regards,Jim

Have reported the issue...E.

Anyone else who wants to send a bug report to NVIDIA? I hope so even if you've done it in the recent past. Thanks to all for your assistance in trying to get this brought to the attention of NVIDIA techs. Maybe it will work, maybe not...Best regards,Jim
