March 15, 200818 yr Hi: I have followed the directions in this excellent posting:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...id=436619&page=I followed them step by step, yet when finished, my defrag program still indicates that I have 8 fragmented files and 28% total defragmentation...The screen appears to indicate that a good defrag job has been done...So, why the 28% defrag remaining? I am using O&O Defrag, just like in the directions in the posting...Thanks for your assistance...Steve in Kansas
March 15, 200818 yr Do you have enough free space on the disk to perform a defragmentation? Are those files system files that cannot be defragmented while running XP or Vista? Is there an option to perform a boot defrag session in O&O to defrag system files?Ulf B
March 15, 200818 yr .. and does O & O defrag the system and swap space filesystems by default? i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
March 15, 200818 yr Are you sure that it says 28% or is it possibly 0.28% instead? If it is the latter, I wouldn't worry about it. R-
March 15, 200818 yr It says 28.6% for sure with 6 fragmented files...It is a brand new 740gb HDD with only FSX and a few other small programs installed at this point...No add-ons (except SP1/2)...Vista Ultimate with all known updates installed...Maybe I will try another defrag program...Any additional advice is welcome! Thanks a lot,Steve
March 15, 200818 yr First of all... I hope you saw that list was specifically for XP SP2You have used it for VISTA in which it will work to a certain degree but it will not have the same impact it does with XPThe space you are seeing is the VISTA OS locking the System Restore partition area and not allowing O&O access.. Please read what I posted about that here and how to recover the space and have it clear the defrag:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...id=438811&page=Also, please review this list of other items for Vistahttp://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...id=439174&page=the security software should be NOD32, nothing else
March 15, 200818 yr Hey Nick, you must sometimes wonder why you bother;-) Never mind 'Read The Smallprint' - 'Read The LARGE Print' Windows 10 (x64) - X-Plane 11 - M/B: Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero - CPU: i7 7700k (@5.0GHz) - RAM: 32Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 @ 3200MHz - Video: GTX1080ti - Cooling: Custom water loop (EK 140 Revo D5 pump/res combo, EK EVO CPU block, EK XE360 Rad)
March 15, 200818 yr What I posted can be used in VISTA but I hesitate saying "DO IT" because of these issues I am not prepared to work through, and, there will be changes and expanded parts not included in that list for VistaAnyone who wishes to do that is welcome but what I don
March 15, 200818 yr On that subject Nick, I have a question for you....(Sorry Steve to hijack your thread). My XP-Pro install is from an OEM (but not DELL), SP1a CD - though updated with SP3 download v3264 from MS.Is there any way of getting this installation into the shape required, i.e. correct LBA files ect, in order that I may follow your guide to the letter?Or, do I need to reinstall, using a slipstreamed CD? Previous problems include failure after 'offline' defrag. Thanks Windows 10 (x64) - X-Plane 11 - M/B: Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero - CPU: i7 7700k (@5.0GHz) - RAM: 32Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 @ 3200MHz - Video: GTX1080ti - Cooling: Custom water loop (EK 140 Revo D5 pump/res combo, EK EVO CPU block, EK XE360 Rad)
March 15, 200818 yr Slipstream CD clean installthe issue is missing code in the file ntfs.sys and the HAL which was not upgraded in a clean install using the right ntfs.sys file. You upgraded with a web download and therefore the HAL is not corrected.Even if you had the right ntfs.sys file, and, assuming it did register correctly, your HAL can not be upgraded without a complete wipe and clean install with the correct ntfs.sys file on the CD
March 15, 200818 yr your solution is here -- > http://www.PerfectDisk.comI personally used it and it rocks !! it even defragments boot files and free space in ur HDD
