Which Add-Ons won't run in Vista 64?

Featured Replies

The Dreamfleet Dakota that is featured in the current "PC Pilot" - issue 52 - is reviewed as not Vista 64 compatible. Whilst I am aware of driver issues with Vista 64 I am surprised that some add-ons - & presumably other software - will not run under it.As I am contemplating Vista 64 for my new computer with 4Gb memory I would appreciate knowing what FS relevant software won't run with it.Chris

Maybe I shouldn't say because I haven't read the review, but I can't help but wonder if it's more a question of not being tested with Vista so they can't say for sure it works. Better to go to Dreamfleet directly and see what they say. There is plenty of software that does not work with Vista. Most major software is fine, however. When I switched to Vista I had to do some uprgades. The new stuff is far better anyway.Bob

i5, 16 GB ram, GTX 960, FS on SSD, Windows 10 64 bit, home built works anyway.

On Vista 64, the key annoyance is whether the gauge code is signed by the publisher or not. FSX will prompt to load unsigned code once if that's the case. Publishers are slowly learning that code must be signed on Vista 64, and that requirement has to do with beefing up the security for all windows applications, not just FSX or its add-ons. For example, you can no longer run unsigned kernel mode code on Vista 64. Vista 32 does not have this requirement. Thus far, I've not run into any issues with any FSX add-ons. If the add-on works with FSX, you should be good to go on Vista 64. Most of the issues are not O/S related, they're FSX related (texturing and the like).I'll say this: Vista 64 appears to run much faster than Vista 32 and if you have 4Gb of memory, you will not get the OOM out of memory error in Vista 64.Etienne

I have looked at the Dreamfleet web site & sure enough it shows the Dakota as XP & Vista 32 (therefore not Vista 64) only.Searching the Dreamfleet forum suggests that the lack of Vista 64 compatabity is to do with 16bit code in the GPS which Vista 64 will not run.Is this an isolated example? - it begins to appear so.Chris

Vista 64 bit does not run 16 bit applications. Some of the Dreamfleat aircraft use the RealityXp Garmin which in turn uses the 16 bit Garmin trainer software from Garmin. This means GPS's of these planes will not work in Vista 64bit. Swap them out, with FS Panelstudio, for either the default or Simflyer GPS's and you can use the Dreamfleet planes again. Apperantly RealityXP is working on a GPS based on the 32bit software, but when that will be finished is anybody's guess. In short the answer to the original question is that all 16 bit applications won't run in Vista 64.Regards,Gerhard

Did someone say 16bit? Hey I remember that gauge. Yes, I didn't think about that at all.Etienne

So I guess the question now becomes how many current add-ons, other than Dreamfleet, include code - probably 16 bit - that won't let them run in Vista 64?Or have I hit on the only examples?Chris

You've most probably hit the most commonly used ones!! :)Regards,Gerhard

That is correct. The Reality XP GNS series all make use of 16 bit code in their current (and all previous incarnations) and will NOT work under 64 bit operating systems.I have heard rumours (but nothing more than that) that the FSX version of the Dakota may contain a new 64 bit compatible GNS, but I have no confirmation and that plan may have been shelved due to development timelines, cost, or other difficulties so don't hold your breath.
