Had to change video card to ATI3870. Need setup help.

Featured Replies

Greetings, due to a long story that I will not gt into here, I changed my video card from a 8800GT to the 3870. This being a non-nVidia card, can someone with this type of card tell what the settings in the control center should be? Also, some hints on the FSX settings would be nice too.ThxTurnipSPECS:VISTA Home Basic 580 WATT Sunbeam PowerCrucial Ballistix 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAMASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Conroe 2.33GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80557E6550ATI Sapphire 3870 512 SB LIVE 24250 GB WD SATA HD 120 GB WD IDE HDftxsupporter.gif[/url]

The CCC settings are important for fsx, make sure you dont enable aa/af through fsx or you will get severe performance degradation whenever 3d clouds are in view, so in fsx set filtering to trilinear. In ccc set af to 8x/16x and set aa to 2x, 4x will hurt performance alot since 4x in ccc is like nvidias 4x4 aa which is much to hard on the gpu. When you set 2x aa set the filter to wide tent to get 2x6 aa. Afaik, you cant get 4x2 aa in ccc, or at least I havent wound a way. Also make sure you install the hotfix for the catalyst 8.3 drivers.

Thx for the info. Actually I'm using the new 8.4 drivers. I know these are not supposed to be released yet but they came with the card. ( 8.432 ) Where do I get this fix at and what does it do?Also, you say not to enable af in FSX. How do I disable it as I don't see a callout?

Hi Turnip,I've uninstalled the bloated CCC software. Instead I use Ray Adam's Tray Tools which has a much lower overhead and simpler interface.Mike's tips are spot on, go with those. You can create a profile in Tray Tools that will load your preferred settings for each game you load. I use identical AA/AF settings for FS9 and FSX.You can download his latest beta version from here. It's especially important you use the beta as he's tweaking it for the 3870.http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=255769Finally, I haven't tried the 8.4 drivers, I'm still using 8.2 which gave me the best 3DMark06 result.Cheers,

Thanks Ray, I used Tray Tools before, when have another ATI card and liked its abilty to overclock so easy. How do I disabled AF in FSX?

OK I installed Tray Tools but can't locate a un-installer for the CCC. I can't find it in PROGRAMS under Control Panel. ( VISTA ) Also, do you have a profile that you are using for FSX. I'd like to duplicate it if possible. Seems there are alot of callouts for stuff I know nothing about.Thx again.

Hi Ray,I've read a lot of your posts concerning the 3870 with interest as I just ordered one yesterday and am also trying to set it up properly. I am planning on using the 8.2 drivers as you suggest, but they are the Catalyst drivers. The question I have, and I just opened the link to ATT and will look in there, is how do I just get the drivers without CCC and use Adam's Tray Tools? Can't wait to see the new card in action. I'm getting many CTD's with a 7900GS, and am hopeful the 3870 will aleviate that most annoying problem. (And look better too!) Todd

Having setup AA and AF in ATI Traytools, I can see how to turn off AA in the Sim, but what about AF?? Should I set, Bi, Tri or Aniso in the Sim?Thanks for any helpBarry

Hi Turnip,It's one of the options on the settings screen. Just choose Trilinear instead.Cheers,

Hi Todd,Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. CCC entries should be listed there. The system will need to reboot after which it will use the generic Windows driver until you install 8.2 Catalyst. There should be a link to 'Drivers only' on the ATI download page - just under the Catalyst Control Centre option. Also, there's an utility on www.guru3d.com called Driver Cleaner that will remove any reference to the driver you select. It will delete all the sub-folders under C;|Asus where they're stored so copy them somewhere before running it. It does a god job of cleaning out old references and especially so if you've switched from nVidia.Look through the messages on the link I provided earlier. Any link to the lastest beta TT will give you the latest version.Cheers,

Hi Ray,Appreciate all the info. I'm certainly following the TT thread and will get the latest version when I install the 3870. Will also use DriveCleaner as you suggest. Can't wait to see the difference with thew new vid card. One other question I have is in regards to FSX.cfg. When I install the new card, should I delete FSX.cfg and then let FSX generate a new .cgf file. I would think that I should so the 3870 is recognized as well as other things I may not be aware of. Thanks again,Todd

Hi Todd,It's best to delete it and let FSX create a new one. However, if you've customised button presses to FSX commands you will lose those. You could just rename FSX.CFG to OlDFSX.CFG and then copy and paste the assignments to save yourself a bit if work.Cheers,
