Hardware or software problem?

Featured Replies

Hi,I have a recurring problem and I'm not sure if it is the well known nvidia 8800GT crash or a separate hardware glitch. The issue occurs randomly while flying different plane's. I have tried the new 174.74 beta drivers with nhancer and no relief. I suspect hardware because I get no messages from windows. The screen will start to break up with thin horizontal lines spreading across the monitor; then the monitor goes black. All I can do is turn off the computer and reboot. This is a new computer and everything is suspect. :) Thanks in advance for any help.Bob..

>I suspect hardware because I get no messages from windows.Your OS events logs don't have any logged errors either? To me it seems to be a hardware error, either with your monitor or the graphics card. If you have an old monitor and graphics card you could replace one part at a time to check if the replaced component was faulty.Ulf B

Thanks Ulf. The monitor is a new Dell 22" wide screen. The system is two weeks old. The event viewer doesn't show a consistent error. I did get one nvd?? (can't remember) associated with nvidia, but only one out of the 4 or 5 of the times the screen went black. Thanks.Bob..

This is a bad problem with the 8 series cards..It typically starts like that then spirals downwards..Thers is only one fix I could find..My wife has this prob and I returned the puter back to them....It it gets to this point ..Who knows.display driver nvlddmkm has stopped responding and has recovered ". if it is this then it is a problem...This works for some..If using vista 64 is a hassel as reguards to Admin. access to do....http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet...nvlddmkm-s.aspxHopefully this is not your prob...It sucks for all under attack of it.....

Otherwise send the computer back and tell them exactly what to do to get it to act up. Good luck.

I'll re-seat the card. I'm trying to figure out if what I am seeing is the frequently reported 8800 driver induced crash. Right now I don't think it is, and will contact VM for tech help. I have two weeks left in which I can return the computer. Thanks everyone for you responses. Bob..
