DDR2-800 vs DDR2-667

Featured Replies

If I replaced my DDR2-667 with 800's, would this push up my FSB (of which my MB is capable) to 1600?It is now 1033 (or ?)If not 1600, then what? the same? What would be the benefit if any of going with DDR2 800s ?Allen

Actually, it's the FSB that drives the ram. DDR means "Double the Data Rate" of the FSB. Whatever the FSB speed, the ram will run at 2X (unless you get fancy). It sounds like your current FSB speed is actually 266, cuz 266 times "Quad Pumped" (aka, 4X) is ~1066. The actual FSB speed is 266. So your ram is running at 2 x 266 = 533.There is absolutely no performance benefit in running either your FSB or ram faster. However the FSB also drives the CPU's speed. So, the Only benefit of increasing the FSB is to drive the CPU faster. This is how we overclock our CPUs. See how it works? Want to try?

I just did an MB and ram upgrade. I was going to go to 800, but ended up going to 1066. Jumpers on the new MB let me set FSB to 400. As a result my 2.6 dual core is running at 3.2. Haven't messed with anything else. 3Dmark 06 score went up 2,000 pts. Some fps gain, but what is better is that if I lock frames at 30 or so,things are very smooth. Still working on settings.Bob

i5, 16 GB ram, GTX 960, FS on SSD, Windows 10 64 bit, home built works anyway.

Unless you reset the ram divider, the ram is running at 400x2 or 800Mhz. The ram's label only states the speed at which it is rated to run . . . not the speed that it WiLL run. It's still running at DDR, or Double the Data Rate of the FSB. Any additional performance is due to the increased CPU Clock. Performance wise, ram speed increases are meaningless.

Heh...overclocking, been playing with that fire for years and last month it bit when my PSU blew and fried the CPU and MOBO...only NOW did I rebuild my simming rig!
