Advice on memory upgrade for overclocking.

Featured Replies

I have a Q6600 CPU that I am about to OC on an X38T GB motherboard, and wish to try some better RAM. Current RAM is 2 X1GB of DDR3/ 1066 / CL7. http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.asp...2KIT12864BC1067The RAM that I am looking at is:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820146777orhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820227285Both are DDR3/1600, which will allow me to OC without worrying about RAM speed. Plus, CL6 seems better. Any comments most appreciated. Thanks, Bruce.

4GB is the way to go. 2GB is acceptable for FS9 on XP, but it seems a bit of a waste to replace your memory now only to have to do so again if and when you run Vista and/or FSX.

The crucial stuff is laptop ram. Are you sure that's what you have? You're O/Cing goal with a Q6600 (SLACR) is 3.6Ghz. You'll need a good air cooler. Then simply set your FSB to 400Mhz and your Vcore to 1.45. Your ram will run at 2X (DDR) the FSB. So, a 400Mhz FSB will drive your ram to 800Mhz. That's all you need. I think that DDR3-1066 is the slowest rated DRR3 ram available. However the ram will be running at only 800Mhz, so that's plenty of headroom. You certainly can increase the ram's speed to 1066 (or 1600 for the DD3-1600 stuff), However, there will be no decipherable performance increase by increasing ram speed above 800Mhz . . . or by using faster ram timings. At very least, not hundreds of dollars worth. The - CPU - overclock will provide 95-100% of any (platform) improvement. That's what you're after.

Yo Brucehttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820146777thems what you wantDDR3 1600 7-7-7 1T and tRD6you aint getting CL6 on 1600 @ 2x2GB and at DDR3 (I assume this is a DDR3 motherboard) you dont need CL6Noel has those sticks running 408x10 333 STRAP @ just over DDR3 1600 7-6-6-7 1T and tRD6 on a QX9770. On your Q6600 AND ASSUMING it is a G0 stepping proc you should be able to do 400x9 (3.6GHz) @ 333 STRAP and 7-7-7 1T and tRD 6 with those sticks, no problem on the right heatsink

Mushkin and G.Skill are my favorite brands. Mushkin has outstanding customer service and good performing kits. G.Skill seems pretty darn stable and is usually sold for quite a nice price. Geil was good (haven't heard much from them recently) back in the day. Corsair is also pretty good, but I have had a few issues with it (a while back).Kingston HyperX has been great for me on this rig (it replaced a kit of Crucial BallistiX PC8500 I had). Crucial BallistiX PC8500 can take a long walk on a short pier. The PC6400 kits supposedly work MUCH better tha the PC8500.Patriot has been known to be some of the fastest kits around but can also be hit and miss with regards to stability. OCZ is a pretty good brand with enthusiasts in mind, the "Reaper" kits are quite popular. If I was going to choose a kit for your build, I would take Mushkin or G.Skill. I would lean more towards G.Skill though due to their cost, solid performace, and stabilty. You really can't go wroing with either brad though.
