My first repaint-Delta 747-400

Featured Replies

I've decided to try to do a Delta New Color of PMDG 747-400, since I've not managed anyone else to do it for me. ;-)I think I can pull it off except the tail, since I'm lousy at hand painting. Anyone got some tips or tricks how to go about that. All help is welcome! Many thanksRegards/

Hey, got any shots of the paint scheme so far? Would like to see how its going :)Regarding the tail, you could either paint it or use a photo to do it photo realistic.Heres a good image:http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1002225/L/ I'm not sure on the size of the tail texture map, but you could either cut it out and size it correctly and lower the opacity. Then you could trace it. Using maybe the line too for the sharp lines separating the colour (what program are you using?) and then use a soft brush and trace the shading.Alternatively, once its resized to the tail you may be happy with it as it is.. check it out in the sim. If you are then use the actual image to have it photo realistic. Remember to change the number at the top of the tail..

HiThanks for the link.Managed to cut out a good tail from it, but I need to "stretch" and "pull" it since the 757 tail isn't the same shape as a 744 tail, don't know how to do that(using photoshop). Thanks again.Regards/

Have the layer with the tail image on it selected, go to Edit - Transform - Scale. The nodes that appear around the selection will adjust it from where they are placed. Holding shift and dragging the corner diagonally will enlarge the selection proportionately.

Here's a first picture of the project. Have the engines left and that light blue that goes from the tail down on to the fuselage, which I have no idea how to do, so feel free help out here. ;-)third.jpgRegards/

Excellent job, especially for a first repaint! :)For the part to go onto the fuselage, this will require a little bit of experimentation. Take your resized image (hopefully you kept the fuselage part of it as well), and select the Polygonal Lasso tool (the keyboard shortcut being L). Make a selection around the part you want to be on the fuselage, have it so it is flush with the part on the tail. Include all of the tail plane as it'll help when patching up the curve.Join up the selection with the lasso tool. Go to Select - Inverse (Shift+Crtl+I) then hit delete. It should remove away the waste part. Crtl+D the selection and move it into place on the fuselage. You'll have to keep adjusting it little by little to get it lined up properly with the tail.Once you're happy with it, complete the curve with the path tool (theres a tutorial on my website on how to make curves) and fill it in with the main blue colour. You could try and find other images where you can see the the hidden part of the fuselage if you want to draw in the shading. You might also want to extended the left side (leading edge) on the fuselage so it comes to a point to meet up with the other side of the fuselage.I just re-read what I typed.. let me know if you have any questions!

Can't get the cargo doors texture(edges and stuff) to show, nose wheel door either too bright or too dark. Small but annoying stuff.

Niclas

For the nose wheel door, check the alpha channel to make sure its the same intensity (if you're applying alpha channel at this stage). The only other thing I can think of is the base texture being slightly different from one another. Also, check other paint schemes to see if they have the same problem.Unfortunately I don't have the model so I can't help you out much here.

Nooo don't give up now. lol. This is what repainting is all about. Getting the livery & the colours right is the easy part. The hard part are the little details which take ages, are a pain in the #### to do & hardly anyone will notice anyway. This is what seperates the good painters from the also rans! :)Exactly what probs do you have? no cargo doors? Can you not copy them across from another PMDG texture?Cheers,Phil

Yes, please continue Nick! I would love to fly your paint. The current Delta livery is so nice, one of my true favourits.
