Russian planes

Featured Replies

Hi,I think is time to start a topic for the fans of the Russian planes. I like these planes but I have difficulties to follow the Russian language topics.Let's discuss news on any Russian planes here in this forum and let's advertise other resouces of information. The first info resource:I started an English topic on AN24-RV. We put it on avsim.ru just to be close to the Russian topics. Our Russian speaker colleagues are frequently visiting our English topic. Come and participate:http://www.avsim.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=10914Gabor

The info below is from the English AN24-RV forum on avsim.ru:http://www.avsim.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=10914Come and participate...----I finaly put together a complete AN-24RV package! I would like to emphasize that I am concentrating on the "basic model" i.e. the original gauges measuring in SI (meter, km/h...). I also do not care about extra liveries (textures) at the moment. The items are numbered. There are some items marked with the same number. You have to use only one of them. Those same-number-items are either FS2002-FS2004 variants, or different versions. Make decision on the recommendations and notes.----1/ Basic packSite: www.avsim.comFilename: antonov_an24rv.zip Added: 11th November 2003 Author: Dimitri Samborski Size: 13608kb NDBs (АРК) won't work and there are some more problems with AP.----2/ Patch 1Site: www.avsim.comFilename: an24_patch1.zip Added: 24th November 2003 Author: Dimitri Samborski Size: 2770kb NDB receivers and AP are working. It contains some new gauges and new gauge versions besides other things. You must modify the panel.cfg file to use STT_An24_26_V1_32 instead of the old STT_An24_26_V1_3.----4/ Windows regional settingsAuthor: Gabor HraskoAdded: 18.06.2004 For some there are some strange problems:- Thought autopilot generaly works, the "up-down" switches do not modify the pitch of the plane.- RSBN channels can not be set (RSBN does not work)Related parameters are defined in:GaugesAn24_CFGstt_navgau.cfgThe file contains numbers with decimal digits. It uses '.' (decimal dot) while some Windows regional settings (Hungarian for example) expect decimals separated by ',' (decimal comma) instead. The result is that the configuration data is read incorrectly by the gauges. You have two options:- Modify the stt_navgau.cfg file to contain ',' instead of '.' to sign decimals- Modify Windows regional settings to use '.' instead of ',' to sign decimals (PREFERRED SOLUTION)----5/ Sound packSite: www.avsim.ruFilename: an26snd.zip (http://www.avsim.ru/files.phtml?action=download&id=1337)Size: 11 578 kAdded: 15.10.2003 21:03Author: Николай INS СамсоновWithout this package there will be problems with the sound once you install the new dynamics. The basic package defined the plane as a jet and sound was created for that. The new dynamics correctly define the plane as turboprop, but that requires a bit different sound configuration. This is done here.----6/ Dynamic (latest version)Site: www.avsim.ru (referenced in the forum)Filename: Antonov_An_24RV1_35.zip(http://www.avsim.ru/forum/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=133548)Size: 13 KAdded: 01.08.2004 09:36Authors: Aless, PI314, CURL and UNKLThe authors are welcome anyone to provide test flight results. This will be corrected in later versions. I also feel the plane too sensitive to joystick movements, but this can be adjusted in the [tunning] section of aircraft.cfg. For me the plane starts sometimes dancing and bouncing on ground. Sometimes it relates to dynamic weather reloads. Or/and to surface type? For many this problem does not appear. Gabor, very nice effort, thanks !Such topics unfortunately often disappear soon.As already discussed in that avsim.ru topic, it would be indeed nice to have a seperate Forum for Russian aviation here at avsim.com. The is so much great stuff out there. Just to mention a few : The work of Samdims team (An-24, the upcoming Tu-114), the Project Tupolev, the IL-18, so many excellent sceneries and utilities. Would be nice to have a general discussion forum for it.To the AVSIM staff : How about it ;) ??Michael

Hi All,I am curretnly writing an english AN-24 tutorial. At the moment 3 things escape me.1) There is a warning on the ground when more power than 80% is applied, I am sure there must be something I am missing pre-flight, but I dont know what it is ;)2) When in alt hold mode on the AP, after a while the plane will pitch up and down fairly bad, the only way to stop it is to turn of the alt hold, is there anything that I can do to stop this happening.3) I have the AP and the VOR system figured out, BUT, I still can't get the AP to NAV function, how do I do this?CheersDan.

I will be opening a Russian Aviation forum in a couple of minutes. When I do, I will move this topic to there. Also, as regards the subject of hosting a Russian Aviation Specific web site, AVSIM would be happy to host any effort along those lines.

Whow, that was fast. Thanks, Tom. Great service !Michael

>I am curretnly writing an english AN-24 tutorial.Let's synchronize our efforts. I am just finalizing a documentation on AP, RSBN and NAS in AN24-RV.>1) There is a warning on the ground when more power than 80%>is applied, I am sure there must be something I am missing>pre-flight, but I dont know what it is ;)I can not imagine. What is the warning at all? Is it a sound? There is no such strict pre-flight check as for example with PT Tu-154.>2) When in alt hold mode on the AP, after a while the plane>will pitch up and down fairly bad, the only way to stop it is>to turn of the alt hold, is there anything that I can do to>stop this happening. It is most probably a trimming problem. If you go to altitude hold mode (KB button) when the plane is not stabilized more-or-less correctly (i.e. it is in level flight), the AP might do a lot of trimming to reach stability and might reach (or nearly reach) trimming limits. In this case if later on some further trimming is needed for the AP, it will not be able to do it and that could result what you had experienced. In real plane AP would make a sound alert and turn off AP!So the solution is to manage a nice level flight manually, adjust speed, pitch and trim in a way that trim wheel (visible at left side of AP) is not at limits). At this point you can press the KB button to HOLD the level flight. That button is not to BRING the plane to level flight, especialy not from a larger rate descend or climb, however it will try to do it. This is the recommendation in the real plane's operation handbook also.If the AP is in a climb mode when you want to go to level flight, you have to do the following: 1/ Press and hold (!) the 1st button of the joystict (generally brake) to temporarily turn off AP2/ Direct the plane to level flight and trim it3/ Release the brake button to re-engage AP4/ Press the KB button to hold level flight>3) I have the AP and the VOR system figured out, BUT, I still>can't get the AP to NAV function, how do I do this? This is a difference between "western" and "eastern" type of autopilots. At least in AN24 you do not have an AP function to maintain a VOR radial (NAV function). In fact you do not have a function to keep an altitude either. The AP is just maintaining the last pitch, direction and a bit altitude (in KB mode). It can stabilize a magnetic or a true heading, but not the direction (see wind drift). So you capture the VOR radial, set heading with calculating wind drift and ask AP to keep this heading. Time-to-time you have to check the VOR radial (track indicator) and adjust heading on AP.There is an advanced modeof AP that can maintain a course (either to of from a VOR, or even to an ISEC point), but that is linked to the NAS-1 equipment. Document in English will come soon.Gabor

Thats the thing with the alt hold, I get it nice and trimmed, level flight, engage the alt hold, and its fine........for a while. After about 5mins, its starts it pitch up and down.Look forward to the other docs, so we can finally fly this great bird how at is meant to be flownDan.

Hi Dan,Just to be sure, could you check my earlier post on the standard package? It would be good to know whether we are speaking about the same plane or not :)Standard AN24-RV package:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho..._id=1&mesg_id=2This package was revied by the developpers.Gabor

Yes mate, it was complied using the thread on the avsim.ru boardDan

Right, after a few hours last night I can accomplish the following.1) I can slave the AP to the Hydrocompass, and it works pretty well, I am a little confused by the markings on the AP themselves though. There is a "mode" switch on the AP with 3 positions, the bottom one is "CAP", this is the switch that slaves the AP to the Hydrocompass. The middle one is, I presume, just to use the turn handle on the AP itself, and I also presume the top most position is the slave the AP to the NAV 1?, I still can't get the AP to follow a course as defined by the NAV 1, although I can get the VOR indications on the VOR indicator on the main panel.2) I am still struggling big time with the Alt hold function, It will hold alt ok in a straight line untill one of the following.1. I change views, then the Alt function starts pitching the aircraft up and down badly.2. If I start to turn with the Alt function engaged the same happens, also when this pitching is occuring the "autotrimmer" light on the AP panel is flashing in time with the pitching. The only way to stop the pitching is to turn off the Alt hold, re-trim the plane manually, and then re apply the Alt hold.Incidentaly, as it is, I need to turn off Alt hold when turning, and trim manually until the turn is finshed.I acutally managed to complete a whole flight last night, its a real, real good plane when you get the hang of itAny ideas guys?Dan.

>1) I can slave the AP to the Hydrocompass, and it works pretty>well, I am a little confused by the markings on the AP>themselves though.>>There is a "mode" switch on the AP with 3 positions, the>bottom one is "CAP", this is the switch that slaves the AP to>the Hydrocompass.>>The middle one is, I presume, just to use the turn handle on>the AP itself, and I also presume the top most position is the>slave the AP to the NAV 1?, I still can't get the AP to follow>a course as defined by the NAV 1, although I can get the VOR>indications on the VOR indicator on the main panel.Dan, I think we are not speaking about the same thing. I attach the picture of the AP of the standard AN24-RV. Here we have a three-stage switch at the bottom-right above the green lamp:- GPK (up): keeps current heading based on the GPK Gyro- GMK (middle): keeps current heading based on the GMK Gyro (magnetic HDG)- 3K (down): turns the plane to the direction defined on the "Turn Indicator" (with the small plane figure). This is also attached to the GPK gyroNone of these modes relate to any VOR transmitters. The AP is not connected to the VOR/NDB system in any sense.GPK mode: Using this mode you will fly along a Great Circle (orthodrome).BMK mode: Using this mode you will fly along a Loxodrome.3K mode: Simply turns to a predefined direction. After finalizing the turn you swithch to either GPK os GMK mode.Gabor

Right, I am sorta with you now, this is one wierd plane :-lol.Ok, so there is no way to slave the AP to the VOR, no problem, at least I know and can stop trying ;).I am still confused by the switch positions.GPK Gyro?, what is this, and the same for BMK Gyro.3K, yeah, this is to what the manual describes as the "hydrocompass".Any idea on the Alt hold?CheersDan.

Dan,Please give me 3 days and I will comlete the AN24 Navigation documentation. I made a misstyping in my previous post:BMK should be GMK. GMK is the Gyro-magnetic-compass and is the same as GIK (Gyro-induction-compass). Why to have two names???Table of contents of the AN24 Navigation doc is as below:- Directions and courses- Magnetic compass- The GIK gyro-induction compass- The GPK gyro-compass- The Autopilot- Autonomous Navigation System (NAS-1)- Short-range Radio-navigation System (RSBN-2)- Course planning- Example flightsPlease be patient. I think the document will be a real fun. It will give a lot of extra info on the Russian type of navigation. Most of this info will be useful in flying other Russian planes also.-----Regarding your altitude hold problem, I have no idea. I will post it to the Russian forum as well. Just to be sure:- You switched on AP with the 2nd switch from left- "GOT" yellow lamp on top went on- Pressed button at bottom midle- "GOT" lamp goes off, "BKL" green lamp at right goes on- Press right-bottom button "KB" to maintain level flight- Green lamp "KB" left to the button goes onNow AP should maintain level flight. Usually leftmost and rightmost switches should be on (up) to maintain trimming etc.The two yellow lamps at the bottom-left sometimes go on and off signing handled force ("towards you" and "from you") on the yoke. Nothing to do with that, it is normal. The trim position sign at the left is slightly moving up and down. If it reaches the end of the scale it means a problem, the AP will not be able to further maintain level flight.Gabor
