Inlet compressor blades not spinning?

What causes this is the fact that in real life those blades do not spin either. They are inlet guide vanes, not compressor blades. They serve to change the angle of the airflow entering the compressor section.RegardsBob ScottATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-V L-300Santiago de Chile

Thanks Bob. The 4 GE gas turbines we run at the powerplant have inlet guide vanes also but I didn't realize aircraft with older "low bypass" turbo-jets also had them. Our GE's vanes are variable in that the angle changes with unit load demand, to prevent compressor stall. I take it these are fixed in place? Thanks again! Vic

Yes...there are fixed IGVs on the -9 through -17. The -200s used in the DC9/MD80 may have VIGVs, though...not sure. Variable IGVs came along a bit later in the evolution. The JT8D is for all intents and purposes a J-52 military engine (used in the A-4 & E-6) with a two-stage fan section added up front.CheersBob ScottATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-V L-300Santiago de Chile
