Performance Boost Due To Convert. WAV Into MP3?

Recommended Posts

Guest XQ-NUE

Hello,I just saw that wav files are 10 times bigger compared to the same file but in MP3. Does the sound in general have an impact on FS' performance? If yes converting the sounds into mp3 files could give FS more power. Is this right? Thanks for information

>Hello,>>I just saw that wav files are 10 times bigger compared to the>same file but in MP3. Does the sound in general have an impact>on FS' performance?>Not in my experience over the years - fs is crippled by graphics, not sound. Simple test - hit 'q' to turn off sound and see if your fps changes. I'd wager you see no change you can measure, even if you have onboard sound.regards,Mark

and dont forget there is always a draw back when file sizes get reduced.mp3s are compressed, so when the software (the sim) needs to play it, it needs to decode it first before sending it to your sound card. This will take a lot more CPU cycles than WAV files, which goes directly into RAM and to the sound card. This is why MP3s, when used in games, are generally for speeches and music (slight delay doesnt matter), while WAV files are used for action sounds, effects, etc. Thus, MP3s wouldn't work well on a flightsim unless you have a very fast computer, which then defeats the purpose of converting it MP3s in the first place :)Btw, pressing "q" doesn't turn off the sound internally. It just mutes it. I believe the sim is still loading the files. So it's not the best test. WAV files does take a lot of RAM and needs harddrive space for it to be read. So if you have a super fast CPU, but little RAM and a slow harddrive, MP3s *could* be faster than WAV files.-feng

>And I don't think FS would "know" what to do with mp3 files.>>Jim>>http://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-community-sigbanner.jpg>http://www.hifisim.com/I agree, FS is looking for wav files, not MP3sBill
