I love my new case (Antec 300)

Featured Replies

I love my new case that I just got. Its an Antec 300.I had been looking at new computer parts for a while now and considering different upgrade routes (core2 duo,quad,phenom,i7). I was very happy to see the Phenom II come out and get god reviews. I havent actually installedFSX yet on the new machine so this isnt about CPU performance or any of that.Ive done an 'accidental upgrade'. Thats when you buy a MB an intend to use it one way but then circumstances changedand I decided to go a different route. I hope it works out. Time will tell.So...my new MB is an ASUS M3A78-cm and on it is a Phenom II 940 with 4Gig of Kingston KVR DDR2 800. If the motherboard holds up (and ASUS says the Phenom II is supported) then things should be fine.anyway...I tried the MB/CPU in the first case I bought and then watched BIOS temp monitors. The CPU went up to and held steady at 48 which made me uncomfortable but my old machine runs that way and has for many years. It felt quite warm around the heatsink and memory and so I decided to get a new case (the Antec 300).I again watched BIOS temps and CPU only went up to 44 and MB temp held at 32.ASUS has this thing called PC Probe and I wondered if it was acurate. I've always felt that the BIOS monitor was the most acurate but Ive noticed that sometimes the BIOS will say 44 but then when you get into Windows it will say 35 or something. What Ive discovered is that Windows throttles down the CPU so it runs cooler. You probably knew that but I didnt.anyway...all this is to say that my Phenom II idles at 35 or so which is better than my old Athlon64 3200+ which idles at 41. I dont know what temps the Phenom II will get up to while running FSX but if it adds 12 to 15 degrees then Im fine.but the most amazing part to me is how stone cold the heatsink on the CPU is. and there is no heat buildup around it.that case has a 140mm fan at the top and a 120 at the top rear. the PS is at the bottom and it has 3 additional optional 120 fans. I put one in the top front and put my hard just below that height. Antec does everything so you can take it apart and reassmble without any tools. I like it. Its well worth its price. and the blue LED color that everyone is suddenly using is really nice. Its the color of the blue taxiway lights that I like so much.If you need a case to help with temps, I think you would like the Antec 300. Its the low end of their line up. I cant imagine what the 'better' ones offer but Im sure there must be something. As for me, Im totally happy with this one.

DaveI have that case. I was looking for a cheap case with audio plugs on the front, and could take a full ATX MB. There is plenty of room for my VC and extra drives. I've had no cooling problems. The only thing I don't like is that the power button is very close to the "open" button for one of the DVD drives. Every once and a while I go to open the drive and end up turning off the computer. Guess I just need to try and be smarter than the case. Like maybe move the drives down a bay. Bob

i5, 16 GB ram, GTX 960, FS on SSD, Windows 10 64 bit, home built works anyway.
