Ultimate defrag

Featured Replies

Hi guys,I just downloaded ultimate defrag and its hard to underestand. I selected FSX scenery files for high performance. Then I did my defrag under file/folder option. However, there are tons of fragmentated files after the defrag stops. I am just lost on how to use this software. Can anyone help? Should I do Auto defrag then do file folder?

Hello,What I have done : I selected ALL files to be "archive", no files as "hight performance". I run Udefrag with File/folder options as result ALL files are on the inner tracks. After wards I selected the files I wanted as High performance (of course I deselect these from archive) I run Udefrag and as result I have FSX and some Windows and other files as Hight performance onto the outter tracks..Of course it takes some time but the result is very good.Hope it helps.

The guy before me is right about one thing, Udefrag works best if you have something as archive, i usually select the recyclebin or temp folder for this on each drive. If your machine uses the same drive for FSX and OS, then you will get some files that are not really worked on by Udefrag, cause they are system files. On my system FSx is on its drive so its all cleanly and neatly doneBut on my vista OS drive there are many files that appear frangmented, but they appear to be system or HDD volume information. i will not bother with thses. And only put stuff in archive if you are sure its hardly ever refrenced, better to just set your high performance, and let the rest fall in behind, But works best if you set some things as archive, like pictures, recyclebin etc.The best way to find out what folders are actaully being used most by FSX is to use Vista ResourceMOnitor->DIsk Activity View to see what files are accessed as FSX is running. For example you can see the disk loading files for AI planes as the AI come in range, you can see files for your plane being loaded as you chnage views etc, its a great Vista tool for Simers. Then go to ultimateDefrag to place those folders on outmost edge of disk.Since i already done this i can tell you most used folders are.90% FSX/Scenery folder, and less so weather/texture/simobjects etcAnd your OS is mostly accessing User\documents&Settings etc---- check Vista ResourceMonitor, or any other program that allows you to view what files are being read or written where on HDD as FSX runs.Again if using same drive for OS and Vista, you will get some files that seem wroungly placed and perhaps on defraged, but if you click on the file in Udefrag you will find the files are for system volume info or similar and not real files. But next time you are shopping always worth getting FSX and addons on seperate drive, that said 90% of disk activity seems to be FSX \scenary, and putting that on outer edge should improve things, even on one disk system.
