Best CPU up-grade for my mobo

Featured Replies

Would it be possible to fit a new mobo and CPU to my existing rig (specs below) as I cannot afford a whole new system. Thanks for any advice

I'm admittedly not one of the "experts" around here, but I'm wondering what specific problem you're having with your current setup? With the possible exception of too little RAM, the E6700 should be more than capable of running either FS9 or FSX reasonably well. (I can't personally speak to the added demands of a 6-monitor array, however.) If you're using FSX, be sure to follow Nick N's excellent setup guide at the following link: http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=29041 Depending on the issue, you might not require a mobo/CPU upgrade. You could consider moving to 4GB of RAM (an upgrade costing less than $50 at today's prices) and possibly a newer 64-bit operating system to access the additional RAM. You can get a "free" upgrade by overclocking your CPU and RAM, although I notice a lot of user complaints on Newegg when it comes to pushing your particular motherboard to its limits, as well as a lot of RMA complaints. If a flaky motherboard is your main issue, I highly recommend the Gigabyte EP45-UD3P which is more than capable of running your current CPU, as well as LGA 775 quad-core designs. Mine cost about $115 on sale and it overclocks like a dream. Alternatively, if you choose to move to the latest Core i7 architecture, it will require a new mobo, DDR3 RAM, and a new CPU -- and you'd be looking at upwards of $600 for all that. I'd start, though, with Nick N's setup guide, and if you still have a bottleneck make sure it's not your video card setup or your meager amount of RAM before you decide the mobo and/or CPU are the culprit(s). That's my 2 cents, anyway. I'll gladly stand corrected if Nick or one of the other "gurus" around here tell you something different.

Thank you for your advice, appreciated (not sure of your name). I have performed Nick N's tweaks but I want extra eye candy which I don't have at the moment. So, can I change my mobo, cpu, and memory and keep everyting else as it is? I wasn't sure if it was possible or not. I want to up-grade to the latest Core i7 architecture if possible whilst maintaining my current hard drive and GPU's.

Yes. Just make sure the motherboard fits your case (I didn't check the size of your existing MB). Assuming the new MB will have one IDE connection for two devices, make sure you don't have to connect more than two IDE devices (hard drive, DVD/RW, etc). There will be plenty of SATA connections.
