i7 920 (d0) & older bios - will it boot?

Featured Replies

I am considering building a new PC and set my mind on a Asus P6t Deluxe v2 mobo coupled with a i7 920 D0 stepping. However, none of the shops I asked is willing to guarantee that I will receive the mobo with recent bios that is compatible with the newer stepping, so I am a bit worried :( that I end up with something that doesn't work.Does anyone know if the mobo will boot the new CPU even with an older bios so I can upgrade the bios myself :( , or do I need a I7 with C0 stepping for this?Allard.

My P6T Deluxe v2 from NewEgg, installed several weeks ago, came with the 0302 BIOS and booted with my new 920 (SLBEJ - d0) proc with no problems. The only issue noted was the use of USB hubs and Logitech keyboards with some kind of conflict. Using a expansion USB plate on the back of the PC, plugged into the USB 11&12 jack, my keyboard and mouse had no more detection issue during POST. I have had no d0 boot issues using BIOSs 0302, 0406, or 0504.Hope this helps...

Hi Jordanal, thanks for your reply,I have inquired in a PC-forum about the bios issue and replies ranging from "99% sure it boots" to "pretty sure it won't work". Someone asked the same question in the ASUS forum and got a "pretty sure it works".I guess that I must trust my luck to either get a recent bios or hope that it at least boots to allow flashing it.I have read about the USB keyboard problem. I still consider the P6t Deluxe v2 since it is something I can live with and the alternatives all have their own share of issues.

Achitecturally speaking, there's no real big difference between the c0 and d0 procs. I don't think the BIOS even cares about the stepping, hence it'll work with any i7 920. The v2 board is not that old; maybe the early v1 boards had to be upgraded to boot an i7, but not the v2 boards; later released to remove the SAS controller becuase of boot issues with 3rd party controllers.I guess that puts me in the 99.9% sure it will boot crowd. :)

I think I'll risk it because, as you said, it's essentially the same design. Even if the bios is not recent (0102 doesn't support the D0 stepping) chances are that it will still boot with an "unknown CPU" message, allowing me to upgrade.

I'm pretty sure you'll be OK. I have an Asus Rampage II Extreme, which comes with two BIOSes (this is really the only reason for having the Rampage Extreme IMHO). BIOS1 is up-to-date, but I booted from BIOS2 the other day when I was trouble-shooting an overheating southbridge. BIOS2 was significantly out-of-date and it gave a message saying that I should update the BIOS to make best use of the CPU - but it let me boot into Windows so I could have downloaded the updated BIOS file if I'd needed to do so. My guess is that you'd find something similar if your MB comes with an out-of-date BIOS.Tim
