Font used in FSX?

Featured Replies

Is there a setting for the font used in FSX, specifically in the VC's? I seem to have lost some readability of the lettering on VC's since updating IE to IE8, or maybe it's just my aging eyes :). Anyway, I wondered if anyone had found a font setting or any other way to make VC lettering more readable- I guess I could always move my eyepoint closer to the lettering......Thanks, Bruce.

The resolution of the VC is determined by Global Texture Resolution in the Global Options graphics tab. If you use a VC, that slider should never be below Very High. If that doesn't do the trick, then you might want to play with anti-aliasing or filtering options. FSX uses fonts for text, like the main menu or the ATC. The only font use in the VC I can think of is the registration label (i.e. CS-SUE), otherwise the lettering is "burnt in" as part of the raster. This means the letters are pictures of letters rather than fonts, which are algorythmic representations of letters. Jeff ShylukSenior Staff ReviewerAVSIM

Thanks Jeff, I did change GPU drivers and some settings at the same time but never suspected that this was the cause, sine I also installed IE8 at the same time. Thanks, Bruce.

Interesting. Does this mean I can change the N-number that displays on my aircraft. I'd love it if that was the case! If so, does anyone know how to do this? Thanks

When your in the Free Flight menu, click "Change..." under Current Aircraft. You'll be presented with the Select Aircraft menu. Highlight the aircraft you want to fly, then click on the "Details..." button. At the Aircraft Details menu, under ATC Information:, you find the "Tail number" field. This will change both the tail number displayed on the exterior and the instrument panel placard. ...providing the developer did not burn the image into the texture map.YYou can also change this in the aircraft.cfg file.

Thanks for the reply. I've used this procedure to get ATC to call the tail number that I want however, the technique has not worked at changing the tail number displayed. I suspect you hit the reason for this in that the developer of the planes I am using (Dreamfleet Dakota, FSD Saratoga, F1 Cessna Mustang and Duke 60) have the tail numbers included in their exterior image files.

Maybe this will help --> http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleart...uner/Step1.aspx

Thinking back, there are LED-style fonts in digital read-outs like the radio stack or a Hobbs meter or some such. Different aircraft from different manufacturers and developers all have their own standards. Are you having trouble seeing the digital read-outs only or are digital and analog gauges both affected? How about 2D cockpit vs 3D cockpit? Finally, you can try windowed mode versus full-screen mode. Jeff ShylukSenior Staff ReviewerAVSIM

Hi Jeff,The issue that I posted about is most evident with the CS B752, specifically the lettering on the MCP (VC only), which appears to be distorted and somewhat unclear, particularly in low light. I am out of town at the moment but will try some of the ideas posted here when I return. Thanks, Bruce.
