changing the amount of clouds that show up

Featured Replies

Because of FPS problems I fly with the default FS2004 clouds under the "User selected" Fair Weather, or Clear Sky. In the Clear Sky mode after about 30 minutes 1 or 2 small Cumulas will show up. I can change to "Fair Weather" which has a LOT of Cumulas and some Cirrus show up but I get about a 5 FPS DROP, which is too much of a drop for me. Is there any way to control or change any setting to get a percentage of clouds, maybe 5-8 Cumulas show up? This is DEFAULT weather and NOT download from the internet. Thanks jerrycwo4Sample:Clear Sky = 1-2 small cloudsFair Weather = 24-36 cloudsI'd like about 6-10 clouds

Hello You can customize your FS9 weather as well as just selecting the pre defined options.customizing allows you to select how much cloud cover, rain, wind strength etc its all available in FS9.Another thing you could try is looking for third party cloud textures that might for instance use 64,128,256 bit textures(more frame rate friendly) instead of the default 512.These are options that are available in ACTIVESKY for instance, but I am sure there used to be freeware versions available as well. You could try hunting through the FSCom files or indeed Avsim (when they get there library up and running again)cheers Andy

Also make sure Cloud Draw Distance is 30 in FS.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. When you say, "You can customize your FS9 weather as well as just selecting the pre defined options" where is this done in FS2004? I don't remember seeing something like. Where is this "tweeker" located in FS2004? Also I have the Active Sky version that came out just before the version AS 6.5. I will load it and try to downsize the file sizes of the clouds. Does anyone know what the differance is between version 6.5 and the version just before it? It might be named Active Sky 2004. jerrycwo4

Hi,Before ASv6.5 was ASV. It does contain textures that you can change the sizes for. What are your computer specs?

Hello JerryOn the weather page in FS9 (where you select your themes)there should be an option panel two thirds down the page that says CUSTOMIZE WEATHER that's the one you want.cheers Andy

Press 'Alt' to get menu (up top) and go to 'World\Weather'. Then look below themes and you'll find and click the round 'User Defined' radio button, then 'Customize' then 'Advanced'. You will see 4 tabs. 'Clouds' to choose the type, elev range, and coverage. You will also find a 'Wind' tab to set speed and direction. Then you MUST go to look at 'Visibility' and 'fool' with those options. To get a few clouds, set range 4,000 to 8,000 ft. To get a thicker batch of Cumulus (I call them 'thunder bumpers') set range 4,000 to 18,000 (or even 28,000). Set visibility to 20 miles for a mild surprise (with any clouds, including Cirrus). Don't go with stratus, go with Cumulus, broken (3/8), or such. Much better. Also go to 'Options/Settings/Display' and look at 'Weather' tab and set slider to medium and check 'Detailed Cluds' (look MUCH better).Chuck BNapamule

My "problem" is that I'm running a rig with 3- 26" monitors with a 4.0 GHzover clocked CPU and three video cards. If I run the most complex aircraft at the most complex airport with the most complex weather on 3 screens I get a FPS of about 11. If I turn off one screen and now 2 screens are running the FPS goes up to 22 and if I run only one screen like I did for the last 10 years the FSP goes up to 45. I wouldn't trade my 3 screens for anything !!!!!! I could never go back to just one screen. My total view is 180 degrees and over 5 FEET LONG. Thats why I need to tone down my weather. Thanks to all of you for taking the time to answer my post.. Thank you jerrycwo4

That is a beautiful set-up!I really wonder why running 3 video cards and 3 screens with this computer should cause the FPS hits you are experiencing. I run 2 monitors off of one video card with a MUCH older set up and get way better FPS.
