July 30, 200916 yr Hi AllFor the last couple of years I've been exclusively flying PMDG's 737NG.However, a change of job has now meant a much reduced window of opportunity for FS flying. So the complex nature of IFR, "by the book" flying is now out.I've decided to go back to basics and blow the dust of my Carenado Cherokee and look for some of the most outstanding scenic VFR flights that I can find here in the UK.This is where I'm hoping that some local knowledge from you guys will come in handy. Can any of you recommend some stunning UK based VFR flights that I could complete in around 40-45 minutes ?I already have Ultimate Terrain Europe and GE Pro installed so should hopefully be able to make the most of the scenery. Many thanks in advance.
July 30, 200916 yr Well, there is some spectacular scenery just near me, in the shape of the Derwent and Ladybower reservoirs up in the Peak District, which are the reservoirs that supply water to Manchester and were the ones that 617 Squadron used during WW2 when practicing for their raids on the dams in the Ruhr Valley. You don't have to be on a warlike mission to fly there though, and you'll certainly appreciate how pretty it is. It's also good gliding territory in real life, since there are often standing waves generated off the Peak District hills, which can take a glider up to 20,000 feet on a good day, which also means it can be challenging in terms of navigation. The notorious Snake Pass is up that way too, which although fairly treacherous in winter, is beautiful in summer. This is at the base of Winhill, which is a favourite spot for slope soaring when flying from the Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club's airfield at Camphill, and that airfield (gliders only) is just up the way from Eyam, which you may know of from history of the Bubonic plague and what went on in that village when it swept through Derbyshire. All of these places can make good turn points for a VFR flight (which I've done many times in real life). It really is a lovely place (photo realistic scenery is certainly recommended for there). The nearest large airfield to all that would probably be EGCD Woodford, which is a British Aerospace airfield. Woodford is where the crash landing sequences for the movie 633 Squadron were filmed, and also where BAe do a lot of training for pilots converting to the J41, which PMDG are just about to release a version of. It was also used a lot when the DH Comet-derived Nimrod was being developed, and you do still see both those and B707 AWACs aircraft making visit to it now and again. Not far away in basically the opposite direction from all that Peak Distric beauty, is EGCC Manchester International Airport.Carry on in that direction and you'll come to EGNO BAe Warton, where they make the wings for Airbuses and sail them to the construction plants on huge barges amongst other things. In reality they are not keen on letting a lot of traffic land at Warton, especially Nordo stuff, but in FS there's nothing stopping you of course, Further past there is EGCO Birkdale Sands, which is one of the few airfields on a beach in the UK, and always fun to land on. North of there you can find Barrow in Furness, with quite nice estuaries and of course it is also where Britain's nuclear submarines are built, so quite a novel place to visit. That might give you some ideas. To give you some idea of the scenery, a picture of of Snake Pass going over Ladybower reservoir at the base of Winhill can be seen hereAl Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
