Reinstalling FSX not so bad this way

Forcing the generation of fsx.xfg by deleting it forced both files to default settings.

Absolutly, just had to reemphasize the need to backup the file.Thanks for sharing the idea of reininstalling just fsx and copying files and folders you deem safe back in to fix. This isea has has its place, as well as just doing fsx.cfg.fsx managment is an art not a precise science, so one has to mix parts of many ideas to get things to work sometimes.But having a backup makes the job a lot easier.
