airport lighting questions

Featured Replies

Hi all,I've been recreating a small GA airport to get familiar with custom ground polys and know that if I use one, I can no longer see the airport lighting provided by default FS9 or AFCAD. Ed Cox was nice enough to give me his 3D taxiway light, but I'm not really sure how to create the other lighting on the runway. Is that just an effect? If I use a 3D runway light, will it be seen far away? I just saw the other thread on the API and changing the texture, but wasn't sure if my questions fell into that area.Last question. What are the rules governing placement of airport lighting? Does anyone know the FAA rules governing this or where I can download it? I found the airport markings AC, but not anything to do with appropriate distances between runway/taxiway/apron lighting so I know how to place the objects correctly. Thanks,Eric

Hello Eric,Let's see: - ac 150 5340-24 runway-taxiway lights - ac 150 5340-4C runway centerline - touchdown lighting - ac 150-5340-21 airport miscellaneous lighting - ac 150 120-28 CatIII lighting - ac 150 5340-30 airport visual aids - ac 5345-52 visual glideslope indicators - ac 150 5345-44f taxiway-runway signs There may have been revisions since I made a thorough study of this matter some years ago, and my list is already old.Edit: See revised ACs here:http://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/ad...arentTopicID/63Runway lights can be made in different ways: - as a 3-dimensional object with texture representing the lit and unlit stages (day and night textures). You will probably have to learn to use a modeling tool like gMax for this; - the same as above, but with a light effect where the bulb should be; - a simple rotating plane that displays day and night textures (this is probably what the taxiway API does, I think). The distance at which you will see the lights will depend - if using an effect, that parameter can be modified.Best regards.Luis

Thanks Luis.Looks like many ACs in your list have been cancelled. I was able to find AC 150/5345-46D labeled Specification for Runway and Taxiway Light Fixtures from the FAA website.I've learned some of GMax including the ground polys and 3D objects for day and night textures, but have never done anything with effects. Is there a reason why AFCAD-generated lights do not show through my custom ground polys? Is it because of the way AFCAD creates those objects? Ed Cox recommended FSSC for the runway lights so I'll play around with that.EricEDIT: Looking again, the correct AC is AC 150/5340-30D for spacing of lighting.
