I normally use all of them all the time (on ground or airborne), but this is probably wrong. I would check out this link first: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_landing_lights; then look near the bottom of the article for links to Navigation and Warning Lights. Aircraft lighting is different in different parts of the world as explained in these links so you might get several different explanations from flight simmers around the world.
