How to Adjust Aircraft Engine Sounds?

Featured Replies

I'm running a twin who's sound levels seem to be out of step with my other aircraft. The engines are so loud that I have to turn the volume control down, almost to the point of not being able to hear ATC. None of my other aircraft are like that so I was wondering which settings I should adjust to achieve a nice and consistent drone from the engines. Please advise and thanks!Mark

You adjust engine sound levels from the Sound section in Settings, but I expect you will tell me you know that. I suspect you want to tinker with the sound.cfg file but whilst that is possible I don't think it is worth the effort as the sounds are made from a blend of noises and it would be very difficult to meddle with this without affecting the final sound to your ears. Additionally, as far as I have been able to establish the volume of some ancillary sounds (such as touchdown noises) do not seem to be adjustable within the sound.cfg so you could find that whilst your engines sound right, touchdown would sound like a car had driven into the back of your cockpit!Like you I find add-ons have various levels and as I keep cards with references for flying each aircraft type, I simply note there my preferred setting and make it part of my routine to change it every time I prepare for a flight.Best wishes,John

Hi MarkIf the aircraft has its own sound (.wav) files, you could use a program such as Soundforge to reduce the volume directly.Dave

Thanks John and Dave!John...You're spot on that...I did see the settings in the Sound Section already and then tried to brave the Sound.cfg alone! Yuck...there were so many settings in there that I was afraid that if I changed anything, I'd get into the plane and hear the theme song from "The Mickey Mouse Club" instead of the engines. That's a pretty good idea about the cards though...hummm...interesting.Dave...Hey Dave, I didn't even think of that. Good idea, this airplane does have it's own sound files. I'll see if I can get that idea to work...thank you.Thank you both for the good ideas, appreciate it :)Mark
