WideFs read/write permissions to the Flight Simulator Files

Featured Replies

Hi,I use FS2004 and am now trying to take use of WideFS, having left the RCv4.3 installation on my old XP Pro machine and installed FS on my new Vista Home Premium machine. I have set up a network, however, although I have got necessary read/write permissions to all other files and folders, I can't mange to achieve the same permissions for the C:\Users\MyUseName\Documents\Flight Simulator Files. This leaves me with the runtime error 75 of course. My question is; does anyone know how to achieve read/write permission to this folder in a network configuration as described ?Reading from Microsoft's help desk or internet site doesn't give much help and searching other places on the net is also so far of no help.Maybe I need my WideClient computer (XP Pro) to take ownership of the Flight Simulator Files folder, but this is also something I can't find a straight forward guidance for through Microsoft or other links. If this is the way to go I would of course appreciate getting some help on understanding how to make such a set up.Regards,Carl

just the normal networking/sharing sort of stuff. remember there are two type of security. there is the security you place on the share. that needs to be full rights.then the folder you are sharing, has to allow others to write to it.jd

Thanks JD,I'm afraid that's just what I have done, but with no success. I'm really stuck with this and having used considerable time now it seems more and more to me that I have bought the wrong version of Vista. The home range of Vista seems to have a serious lack of options regarding permissions. With Vista Ultimate there are differences in this respect as Ultimate belongs to what Microsoft calls something like business Vista intended for more complicated networks as a small home network. It seems I have thrown myself into a FS configuration that will cost me $$$$.Kind regards,Carl

do you have firewalls open on both pc's to allow SMB, and file sharing, file writing.

Yes I have. I will now reset all settings and start over again, then I think I call the local Microsoft and ask if there will be a problem with this between XP Pro and Vista Home Premium. Thanks for paying attention JD.Kind regards,Carl

you can take RC completely out of the picture.i need to read and write to the fs machine share, where the .pln files are stored. on the fs machine, share the directory, give the share read/write priviledges.on the rc machine, mount the fs machine's share, by name.then try to copy a file from the rc machine to the fs machine. if it works, you're done.are the user names and passwords the same on both machines?when you mount the fs share on the rc machine, are you using credentials that allow you to read/write to the fs share?jd

HI,well now things begin to happen. I have reset the network settings back to square one and started all over again and done so several times without any success. Then as repeating the normal settings for share permissions to apropriate folders, one at a time, Vista suddenly started processing share permissions to all files within respective folders. Until now that hadn't happened ! I have done absolutely nothing else than starting all over again several times doing excact the same settings time after time. Now RC worked but after 4-5 minutes everything gets frozen. I have a dialog on this matter with Pete Dowson as well and he has also given some advice and ideas. Both your and Pete's comments fills in perfectly.

Yes I'm absolutly sure of that !

Ok, that's working now.

Well, I read about that but I haven't got that to work yet. The one machine won't recognize the other that has changed user name and password. Is this mandatory ? If so that is of course a possible source to the misery.
when you mount the fs share on the rc machine, are you using credentials that allow you to read/write to the fs share?
Yes, but as mentioned the connection works for a few minutes.Pete has suggested that there might be a hardware problem. My router NETGEAR RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N,4 x Gigabit LAN, 300 Mbps 802.11N, 2,4 and 5Ghz (3 is complete new. I will try now to add my old router for connection "only" between the two machines. By the way, I use cable connection. Thanks JD, I will not give up; having RC working some minutes from the client machine was really great as the smaller speakers on that machine gave awesome sound effect on top of the sounds from the FS machine.Regards,Carl

I'm sorry for not following the thread prompte myself. I have done "nothing" but trying to make this computer network of mine functioning the last couple of days.I have avast, and after sometime using the free version I did pay for it and hence I'm running the so called version 4.8 professional. I have an impression of this professional payware to be a bit more protective as the freeware version. However, that's an assumption....I have now tried another router with exact the same result. Working some minutes and then the FS addon on the WideFS client machine gets disconnected from FS.To follow your idea, I will disconnect borth avast and firewalls on both machines and then by-pass the router (disconnect it) by connecting the client macine direct to internet. Thanks for following up.CarlEDIT: That didn't help. After a couple of minutes the same happened - as allways.
