DHC6 manual anybody ?

Featured Replies

On a flight from Skyomish to Jon Point's excellent Lewis Creek yesterday I landed the DHC6 and taxied to a halt. I then tried to stop the engines, but was unable to cut the mixture or find any 'stop / start' switch. The file is currently unavailable in the library, and for some reason, I deleted the 'read me' ages ago. Can anybody help with this, or better still, share the manual ?Regards...Stuart

I was too hasty jumping into print. :( In case anybody else was wondering , press CTRL and - to cut engine. Basic stuff I suppose, but for some reason I have not used this command before.I have got FS9 running like a dream now with really good graphics, but I spend 90% of my sim time in FU3 - just can't pull myself away from it. :( Stuart

Here is the Operation section of JonP's readme for the DHC6:Operation:- Keyboard flying. You will need your keyboard or a configurable game pad to get the most out of this aircraft. Of course, a good yoke with throttle is ideal but many controls (engine start and stop, flaps etc) must be done by commands because there aren't controls for them on-screen. - Please note that FU3 doesn't actually model turboprops so we cannot expect perfection. There is no reverse thrust for example so the brakes are over- modelled somewhat, to compensate.- Use <e> for start and <ctrl>+<e> for stop or <shift>+<e> and do it separately. - Forget mixture! If you have a mixture lever, set it to full rich.- Switch off 'auto prop' in 'Options' if you have it on. It will make low-speed control impossible and burnout your brakes!- Radios are: COM, NAV1/ILS, NAV, ADF, DME and a radar transponder. To access, click on the radio stack (or lower right of panel in F2 view) and operate as per 'standard' FU3 radios. To tune COM, NAV or ILS, click on the frequency display and enter the new frequency. The ADF and transponder can be tuned by turning the knobs.Startup:1. Always start with no throttle and the pitch set to 'minimum'.2. When ready to move off, set the pitch control to 'maximum' and wait for the props to spin-up to >1000rpm.3. Release the brakes and apply a small bit of throttle. 3 'taps' on the key- board is ideal. You should move off. Keep an eye on speed. Use the toe brakes for speed control.Takeoff:1. When lined-up on the runway, apply 10 degrees of flaps and 5 'taps' of up- trim.2. Run-up the throttle gradually to ~50% and wait for spool-up, then release the brakes.3. Immediately continue applying throttle gradually. If the engines rev-out or you notice the prop rpm varying a lot, you may be applying throttle too quickly. Like 'turbo lag', there is a lag in the response of the turbines and pitch control mechanism.4. Watch the speed and at ~85kias, rotate and hold the nose up. Initial climbout at 1200-1500fpm (adjust as required). Throttle back to 700 degrees on the ITT gauges (just below red). Raise the flaps around 120kias. Watch the speed vs. climbrate! In thermal conditions, you will climb quicker. Sometimes, 1200fpm is safer, especially if you don't need STOL performance. * Reduce climbrate above 3,000ft to ~1200fpm.For a STOL takeoff, spool the engines to 100% before releasing the brakes, use full flaps and pull the stick back at ~85kias. You may climb as hard as you wish but, when speed drops below 70kias, level-off immediately and regain speed. Flying:1. At level-off, reduce power to the 'red line' on the torque gauges, to avoid overspeed. 172kias is 'maximum cruise'. Vne is 235kts (off the scale).2. For autopilot operation, use the keyboard commands. Heading and Course may be set with the knobs on the HSI (Course on left, Heading on right).3. Switching on HDG at any time locks the AP to the current heading of the aircraft. Adjusting the HEADING knob switches the AP to the set heading, visible on the HSI. 4. All other autopilot operations are 'standard' FU3.5. Best operation is between 5,000 and 10,000ft. The DHC-6 is not pressurised so, take an oxygen mask to get to the actual ceiling of ~22,500ft!6. Use the 'External GPS' (map...) for positional info on long trips. 7. Range (on the 'red torque line') is about ~720nm.Coming down:1. To come down, reduce throttle down to '10' on the torque gauges and wait for the speed to fall below 140kts.2. Drop one notch of flaps and commence descent. Readjust power as necessary. To descend quicker, use more flaps!3. Max speed for the flaps is 150kts*Note: Due to the large wing area and huge flaps, be wary of using full flaps in high winds or heavy crosswinds. A faster touchdown in these conditions is safer. Don't try STOL in a hurricane...Landing:1. On downwind, reduce to ~120kts, flaps to 15 degrees.2. On base, reduce to ~110kts, flaps another notch, wind permitting.3. On final, reduce to ~90kts and leave there. More flaps if you think it's required (again, wind permitting). The combination of engine lag and high- mounted engines means you cannot simply apply throttle to get out of trouble. 4. Over the fence, drop throttle to zero and let her settle onto the runway. Bring in the flaps after touchdown and hit the toebrakes. For a STOL landing, slow to ~75kts with full flaps, cut power and drop onto the strip. It is possible to descend very sharply (good for obstructions) - just watch the vertical speed. On touchdown, immediately hit the brakes HARD and pull in the flaps to prevent bounce. On the ground:1. When down to ~20kts, release brakes and give the throttle-up again. Back to the parking spot, use the toe brakes for speed control.2. At the parking spot, engage the parking brake, set pitch to 'minimum' and hit <ctrl>+<e> to shut down the engines.

Hi Jim,Many thanks for that , it helps a lot !Happy Thanksgiving to all across the other side of the pond.Stuart. :(

Have you installed Naji's Impasse Lodge Package? That is one of my fav challenging landing/ take-off packages. Visually, while parked and looking down through the pass, it is stunning. Then the thing I'll do is boot up FS9, FSX, then XP9 and fly to the same area, imagine there's an Impasse Lodge there, and try and "land". Eye-ball wise the 2 FS games look better and have more detail (ie, there's a high elevation lake just before the entrance); but nothing that is as attactive and enduring as the Flight Unlimted sim. There is, and always will be something about the charm and wonder of the Flight Unlimited series.jimb

Hi Jim,I have re-installed Impasse Lodge, which I forgot I had in my 'add-on stuff' folder.I am careful about installing add-ons because I don't want to exceed the airport icon limit. :( You're right it does look stunning, and I will try your idea of flying to the same place in FS9.Regards... Stuart

Ah good deal.I fly out of Apex Airpark and head 270, up the valley looking for Lake Constance up the pass on the right.

Jim, how about uploading the Impasse Lodge files again? Naji's file as well as your recording is presently unavailable from the library. Hans Petter

Hello Hans, I didn't know we were allowed to re-upload files (until we get an absolute word that a particular file was unrecoverable), especially another authors. But I will upload Impasse Lodge Flt3 here real soon. First I'll try and find the original zipped version.Take care, jimbUpdate: I read at the Library Forum that the original author's can re-upload their files. Forum title is, "Need help downloading a file, Getting the Oooppss message".

Jim, I got your file and tried to send you a reply email but it bounced. Evidently, the email address you used won't accept incoming mail. Could I please get the one that works in both directions once more?A quick note on Impasse Lodge, all I get is a steep hill with no models / objects. I tried a Cessna trainer, chose the icon for Impasse Lodge and watched an aircraft toppling over while being parked. This can't be right. Let's start a new thread and post some pictures showing what it should look like.Hans Petter
