AMD Phenom 965 running warm to hot

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,If you can help me with this, I would very much appreciate it. Whenever I'm running FSX with my AMD Phenom 965 BE, it runs quite warm even with an Arctic Cooler. Anyone out there could recommend another CPU cooler?ThanksAl

More facts would be nice:
  • Have you OC:ed the system and if so how much?
  • What temps do you get while running OCCT and what is the ambient temp?
  • What Arctic Cooler do you use now?

Here is an old benchmark and comparison test: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2006/07/30/...ooler_roundup/1Hopefully some AMD OCers will add their help!

Sorry I should have added more information...I'm not overclocking the CPU. As for the ambient temperature, it's running about high 30's or low 40's, just idling. When FSX is running the temp is the 60's. From the AMD website, 62 is the max operating temperature of this CPU. I purchased an Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2. It actually did worse than the original stock cooler. If anyone has any insight, much appreciated. ThanksAl

Al,Wow, that was really a warm room where you have your computer. No wonder that you have problems keeping your system cool. But it seems odd that your cooler should performe worse than the stock cooler. Maybe you should consider to remount the cooler and clean the cooler and cpu from all old thermal compound and apply new one.Have you removed all dust from mobo and cooler lately? Not cleaning your system regularly will soon or later result in overheated components.Regarding your question about a new cooler I'd say that if you don't OC you'll normally you would do fine with the stock cooler. No need using any extreme cooler. But with that high ambient temps you might need a more effecient cooler. Some articles and reviews:http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/cooling/http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/http://www.anandtech.com/casecoolingpsus/http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/heatsi...e-cpu,2375.htmlEDITED:You might also make a test to make sure that the case isn't the problem. Measure your CPU temp with RealTemp or OCCT while having the case side panel removed. If you get lower temps with an open case you have problem with internal airflow in the case.I'm no expoert on AMD CPUs. But a CPU temp on 60C doesn't seem too high to me, but as I said: I'm not familiar with the AMD CPUs. The Core i7 CPUs will handle temps up to 90C without any problems. If you keep the temp below 80C while running OCCT your'e on the safe side.

There's no way the maximum operating temperature of your CPU is 62 degrees C. Try adding another 30 degrees onto that. 62 degrees is not horrible for a quad core under load, by any means. Also a room temp of 30-40 degrees Celsius is 86-104 degrees Fahrenheit. Do you live in a desert or a closet or something? If your aftermarket cooler is performing worse than the stock cooler, it has been installed improperly.

I think he misunderstood. I think he is saying the CPU is at 30-40C at idle.

Alright, smart Alecs (except Garrett)! He didn't understand the definition of ambient temperature. Perhaps we could have just explained it?

While I myself don't use AMD, I do have an i5 OC to 3.57Ghz and it will run up to high 60s when I play FSX.

Sorry that's right, I didn't understand the meaning of ambient temperature. I thought it meant idling temperature. But anyhow at home, the temperature is around 20C. My CPU at idle is running at 30C to 40C. However, the AMD website says that max temperature of Phenom 965 is 62C. So I didn't make the figure up. http://products.amd.com/en-us/DesktopCPUDe...p;f11=&f12= I did find one culprit to why my the CPU is running warm and that is my case. Too much heat is trapped inside the case. Anyhow, thanks folks for all you insight. It was helpful.Al
