Tail Light Logo Illumination

Featured Replies

Hey Guys, Is there anyway to keep the Tail Light Logo on aircraft switched ON when you have de-selected Landing Lights in the Aircraft Settings section? They seem to be connected! I like having the Logo illuminated but don't like the Landing Lights, even with Nick's Fix.Many ThanksKeith

Rather than re-type the whole thing, I will direct you to - http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=268298regards,Joe
Many thanks for this but I'm a complete novice! What exactly do I have to do?RegardsKeith

Hi Keith,This is a texture editing mod, not a text editing mod.You have to adjust the alpha channel on the lightmap texture(s) so that the light splash for the logo lights has a black alpha channel. You can most likely do this with MSPaint if you have no image editing software. You will need DXTBmp to convert the textures to a format you can edit. You can get that freeware program here - http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/programs/dxtbmp.htmWhat plane is this for/where did you get it?regards,Joe

Thanks a lot for that!! I've always wondered how to do this, as I hate the way the landing light illumination looks in FS. And whenever you'd disable them, the aircrafts night textures wouldn't show!!

Thank you Joe, There are various aircraft I would like to edit! I'm more of a spotter than a flyer and just love sitting at various airports watching flights come and go. As night falls the aircraft begin to show the dreaded triangled Landing Lights, even with Nick's Light Fix!I have nearly 1000 flightplans! My commonest aircraft are Aardvark and HTAI models.Keith

I just realised this actually! Going to be a long process updating every AI aircraft's alpha-channel :(

MMMmm. Well if I could just learn how to do 1 then I'll probably just do my most popular!Keith

Hi Joe,I actually tried doing this to my Project Airbus A320 but have been unsuccessful in obtaining any tail light/fuse textures to show up at night in the sim, with the Landing Lights setting switched OFF. I opened up the lightmap textures in DXTBmp, imported the alpha channel into Paint and made it black, then re-imported it into DXTBmp and saved the image as a 32Bit extended Bitmap. Did I do it correctly?Cheers

Did you try switching on the panel lights? Shift+L is the default key assignment. If you save the lightmap as DXT3 you will get a file 1/4th the size without any loss of quality. This will slightly ease the PC workload.regards,Joe

Yes I pressed 'L' which I believe is the key command for all lights. I have a feeling that when the landing lights checkbox is de-activated, FS completely ignores all lightmap textures hence why the tail-light and aircraft night textures don't show up at all. I changed all lightmap (..._L.Bmp's) textures' alpha channels to black and it made no difference to the outcome.

A little testing shows this to be true.

Careful with that. Many lightmaps have light splashes on the fuselage and/or wings that are meant to come from the landing lights. That part of the alpha would want to remain white so it will work with the landing lights, if you so choose to turn them back on.To be honest, I have always had that box checked. Though I think the look is unrealistic, it's better than bumbling around in the dark, IMO.Guess it's a sim limitation we all have to decide how to manage.regards,Joe
