intro and a couple questions

Hi folks, im pretty new to FSX but having a wonderful time so far, still not finished the beginner missions as yet, but its all a learning curve I guess. The only add on i got so far was a highlands and islands (scotland) scenery pack, which seems better than the standard, but i can see that some of the mesh underneath, while ok, isnt quite right in places I am familiar with. I was completely blown away by some of the tileproxy stuff I seen on youtube, following a couple leads, the creator of the prog reccomended the standard mesh be replaced by :-Include the complete set of srtm 3 version 2 mesh filesfor Europe - This package is part of the freeware world widesrtm 3 v 2 mesh coverage project - Europe include 2 files:srt2eur.zip - srt2eur2.zip.by Raimondo Taburet and J. De Ferrantii was wondering if anyone else has used this freeware mesh and can reccommend it, the only thing is im not sure on the installation translation here :-Install bgl files in any activate scenery folder - and makesure they are higher than default scenery files in scenerylibrary.being green i dont wanna install the said files in the wrong folder, could someone be more specific? - thanks :)ok back to Tileproxy - if I installed this would i loose all the little 3d things like trees and houses and stuff, i know they arent that great and in the wrong places too a lot, but on low level flying they add a wee bit, or is the trade-off for the high-level photography make tileproxy worthwhile? Im also running Vista64 and it looks as if you need to be under the bonnet of the PC at start up too.what do you guys reckon? - leave it for now and buy the easy install scenery? or go for it?thanks :)SooZ

SooZ,while there are new folks discovering FSX all the time, there are some of here who have stayed engrossed and interested in the Flight Simulator series for decades now.Tileproxy adds a dimension that we might have only dreamed about just 5 years ago... it is AWESOME and we are learning to use it better all the time. One thing we all face is the fact that PHOTO scenery takes precedence over the default scenery types that tell where the houses and trees are. So while you can custom make scenery with trees and have it show fine, the defaut autogen trees and buildings cannot show. The tradeoff is definitely worth it and I like low and slow VFR too. But if you want to fly under tree branches you just start FSX and don't start Tileproxy.Raimondo does real good work and you can use his sceneries without worry. But when installing ANY addon scenery it is "better" to place it in its own folder. This allows you to find it again or to simply turn it off if you need to.You said you were new to FSX... if you are not too comfortable with adding such as scenery, I recommend a PDF called "The Bloody Beginner's Guide to Flight Simulator". I could not locate it in the AVSIM library anymore; it may have been lost during the 'hacking incident'. It is still available at Flightsim.com in their library as file bbgrfs.zip. It covers FS9 and FSX and well. It's real good resource information.Feel free to ask us anything about Tileproxy or FSX and we'll try to help.Loyd

Thx Loyd :)i think i will go with tileproxy as soon as i can, but firstly,i need to get the freeware mesh installed over the default stuff, could you explain this, to me a little?"Install bgl files in any activate scenery folder - and makesure they are higher than default scenery files in scenerylibrary."not sure what an activate scenery folder is, and how do you make the bgl files higher - eeeep! Hi Sooz, make a folder called AddOn Scenery. Within that folder, create another folder corresponding to the name of the mesh you are installing, for example: " Taburet Mesh" and then within that, make another folder Called "Scenery"While I dont know the freeware product you are talking about ( there are also payware versions such as FSGlobalX that offer vastly improved detail ) it will probably come in the form of .bgl files. You just need to put these .bgl files in your newly created "scenery" folder. Then start FSX, go to scenery library, click add new area, navigate to where you folder is and when the name appears in the name box, click ok. Your new mash will now be in the library and activated. It will be highest priority as its the most recently installed, but you can move it up and down in the rankings by highlighting it and using the move up/down buttons. FSX should display the higher res stuff automatically over the lower res stuff anyway.Cheers, Mark

thanks mark, that was most helpful, got the new mesh installed and prioritised also tileproxy beta8 which went straightforward enough, then the proxyuser.ini, putting the fsx one into the tileproxy folder. Then disabling UAC and reboot. did the F8 thing during boot up, only new thing i seen there was a dialog box asking if i wanted to use the HDD or my dvd drive to boot up from (chose HDD of course) so far so good. Start Tileproxy, keep an eye on the dos box, and on each occasion i try its telling me it couldnt run unverified drivers, launch FSX and of course its the standard scenery comes up...... looks like the F8 trick has had no effect. I still have AVG running also (this is a complete pest to disable these days) but i doubt that would have had any effect on the F8 function anyhow. Maybe windows Vista 64 just dont like tileproxy, i see some folks here posting problems with it, has anyone at all i wonder, got it to run ok on vista64? I'd really like to get this up and running, but im no pc wizzkid lol :D

ok, update, seeing as the most recent versions of vista 64 have no F8 (disable sig driver) options, i was wondering if anyone else has used this little app to get it going http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=dseo ? . seems like its filter drivers that arent being enabled, no exact path to them on the dos box - any info on the use of the overider tool would be much appreciated :))tia,SooZ

Sooz, it runs perfect on vista 64. You must turn off your anti virus when running TP or it wont work !! Dont worry, you wont get any problems downloading tiles from microsoft or yahoo, just remember to turn it back on when you visit the porn sites... !!!I also use a little app called ready driver plus ( its real easy to find using google) that automatically overides the driver signing everytime you start, so you dont have to do the F8 thing. Do yourself a favour and turn off UAC for good as well. It's crap.Cheers, Mark

ok, i hold my hands up! i had put the config file in the wrong folder, into the scenery folder instead of the ROOT folder which is inside the FSX folder - doh! i appear to have some ground cover now, was in the south of france which was a bit blocky looking, so ill go try somewhere with a better cover and see how it looks, hehe :D
