Going from integrated to dedicated video: what can I expect?

Featured Replies

I have an old computer over here, these are its current specifications:Dell Optiplex GX280Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz (Prescott)1.25 GB RAM DDR2(1 GB PC5300 + 256MB PC3200)Integrated grahpics Intel 915 128 MB (taken from RAM)Windows XP Pro SP3Flight Simulator 2004 (updated to 9.1)In KSEA I can keep up to 18 FPS (Locked at 20, scenery and autogen at Normal) in Carenado's Cessna 182RG when in VC (gauge quality set at high). I'm thinking of upgrading the RAM from 1.25 to 2GB (I'll remove the 256-MB stick, it's too slow... or should I leave it? I have 4 DIMM slots) and adding an inexpensive 512 MB Nvidia 8400 GS video card (all computer hardware here is overpriced). How much improvement in should I expect doing this? Should I better upgrade the CPU instead of adding a dedicated video card? At this time I can't afford to do both.Best regards from Colombia,Luis Miguel

Main rig: self built, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D (with SMT off and CO -50 mV), 2x16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM, Nvidia RTX 5060Ti 16GB, 256 GB M.2 SSD (OS+apps) + 2x1 TB SATA III SSD (sims) + 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD (storage), ID-Cooling SE-224-XTS air cooler, Viewsonic VX2458-MHD 1920x1080@120-144 Hz (G-sync compatible), Windows 11. Running P3D v5.4 (with v4.5 scenery objects as an additional library, just in case), FSX-SE, MSFS2020, MSFS2024 and even FS9! Lossless Scaling for all my sims. What a godsend...

Mobile rig: ASUS Zenbook UM425QA (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU @3.2 GHz and boost disabled, 1 TB M.2 SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro). Running FS9 there .

VKB Gladiator NXT Premium Left + GNX THQ as primary controllers. Xbox Series X|S wireless controller as standby/mobile.

You would definitely benefit from a dedicated graphics card as integrated graphics are woefully inadequate. The 8400 GS is an entry-level card though. If you can afford something a bit more expensive ($100-$150) like a Geforce GT 240 or GTS 250 I would recommend either of those cards instead.
