February 5, 201016 yr Does the map service you choose have any impact on level mapping performance? For instance, I was trying out level mapping with service1 and the ground textures were very clear and sharp. I tried the same level mapping settings with Service3 and the ground textures were kind of blurry compared to how they looked with Service1. I realize it could just be the quality of the map images, but I figure it doesn't hurt to ask.Thanks...

Images taken at different times, different seasons, different altitudes, different resolutions...What I conclude by observation is that generally there are only a couple of source image 'layers'. Just by way of example suppose I have all of California available at 1.2m resolution - what we refer to as level 17. Obviously, no one went back a second time to photograph it at 2.4m in order to make level 16 imagery, and again to make 4.8m imagery...Instead, take the 1.2m, resample it to 2.4m resolution and that becomes my level 16. Resample/resize again and it becomes 4.8m; and again to become 9.6m.Now, that is fine and everything will be 'appropriately' resolved at each level. But it can go the other way also.I gather the area at 9.6m initially and do the same kind of processing; however, when I start with 9.6m, how do I get 4.8m? resample upwards until it's at the SCALE of 4.8m but no additional detail can be gained and it will look a little blurry. Resample/resize again to get "2.4m" and the problem is even more evident. It's like enlarging any normal photo - the more you zoom in, the blurrier it seems to get.But it's level 16, you say, shouldn't it be sharper? It is on the 'other service'. Well, it would have been sharper it the source imagery were initially at a higher resolution. You can't show detail that isn't in the source data. Now, with tile proxy, it is just going to DL the tile that is "level 16" that you asked for; it won't know the quality of that imagery or the source. If it isn't what you would hope, either reduce your expectations, or fly a little higher; or fly somewhere else where the source imagery is more to your liking.Perhaps someday the entire world will be done at 60cm but that time is not yet. In the meantime, we enjoy what is available... most of the world is still 20m at best. Some places are still just B/W!Loyd Hooked since FS4... now flying: FSX Acceleration on Win7/64, Core Duo E8400; GA-EP45-DS3R; GTX 460-768MB; 4G RAM; Freezer 7 Pro
