Winds Aloft - ASE or ASA

Featured Replies

Hello,I got ASE today and it works really well with my PMDG 747-8. I only did a short flight from CYVR to CYWG to try it out but many issues I found before seem to be gone except for two.#1 - I'm not sure how the winds aloft work in ASA or ASE (I mention ASA because I had this problem with ASA before) but very often what is showing on the ND display in the PMDG 747 is way off what is showing up on the "Report" page in ASA or ASE. Example: Wind on ND display says 289/33 and on the Report page in ASE it said 333/48. I did have the "lock to nearest station" checked. The plane did show up on the map and was moving so I assume ASE was communicating with FSX just fine. Upon arrival at CYWG though, the weather was showing exactly what ATIS said it would and when I looked outside it was pretty much exactly as it is out there. (That's the closest large airport to where I live). Even the clear sky and slight amount of fog was accurate, which perplexed me. I was very impressed. So I'm not sure why the winds don't show up properly, or if I'm just confused as to how they work.#2 - OAT compared to TAT inflight. I realize TAT is always higher than the OAT but should TAT not vary a little bit? For awhile now with ASA and still with ASE at cruise speed of around .845 mach and altitude of 38,000 feet the TAT on the display always shows between -16 and -19 degrees. This is regardless of ASA or ASE showing anywhere from -49 to -63 OAT. If I change the weather to the FSX built-in weather then the TAT on the display drops to between -25 and -30.Only reason I mention that is that for a month or maybe longer the TAT has showed -16 to -19 at cruise. Regardless if it's an empty plane flying at 42,000 feet over the north pole or a fully loaded one flying at 29,000 feet over the equator. But, that might be a PMDG issue. (I also recently reformatted my HD and reinstalled everything. That didn't help with either the wind or temperature issue). If I'm wrong and this is how it's supposed to be, I'm fine with that. I'm just wondering. Thanks for the free upgrade from ASA to ASE too, I really like your programs and any friends of mine who use FS9 or FSX have been steered in your direction. I always liked ASA and the support HiFi gives. Keep up the GREAT work!!Jeff

Hi Jeff,Thanks for your feedback! Is this with DWC On or Off in AS?Next time, see what the Shift/Z readout in FS is reporting for winds and compare that to AS.The TAT/OAT thing MAY be a plane issue. On the beta team we do have users that use that plane and nobody reported such an issue to us before release. Not sure what else to suggest.

Jim - I was testing something like this last night in the Quliaty Wings 757. The ASA report was showing wind headings about 30-40 degress different to the ND and the Shift-Z readout which just about matched (3 degree difference which I put down to true/magnetic differences). So, as an example, at FL260:ASE Report page - 244@25757 ND - 286@32Shift-Z - 289@32I didn't record what I was actually seeing but the above differences are in the right proportions. This was with DWC off, FSUIPC smoothing on, Locked to Closest on and using Vatsim weather via ASE. At the time I was 200 miles from origin/destination and the headings/speeds were stable (so not in the middle of anything being smoothed by FSUIPC).Everything else about ASE was wonderful, airport Metars spot-on, visibility and clouds pretty much spot-on as well. It was just the above variance in cruise wind reports that confused although differences like the above are hardly deal killers! Far better than I've seen before with ASA!

Thanks Jim, for the quick reply! That test was with DWC on.I'll probably give it another test later today, but for the time being it's time to head out snowmobiling, hopefully avoid hearing the Olympic Men's hockey score until I get home because I'm recording the game on my DVR. Watch that, once it's over either stare angrily at the TV or cheer like an idiot, then fire up FSX.It's good to have plans.I will report back as soon as I have more information. Thanks!Jeff

Hi Bill,Not sure there. Let's try this, reset FSUIPC back to default setting and weather settings off. Then enable DWC in ASE and fly a flight and see what happens.

Thanks Jim, as I said that difference I noted isn't really a 'deal killer' since they were generally ok'ish. Has DWC been changed since ASA since my experience with it then was that although you got smooth winds, they were weren't necessarily pointing the right way due to some 'averaging' that it did? Since all my flying is online it's important they do at least point roughly the same way as everyone elses. I will try it though. I'm far more concerned about the constantly shifting QNH's mentioned in another thread than I am about a slight disagreement on wind!

Hi Bill,Yes, DWC was worked on quite a bit and beta tested extensively.I feel the QNH stuff was related to the data issue yesterday afternoon, but I am just now working my way up the posts.
