March 13, 201016 yr Does anyone here use FSX with an ATI/AMD 5800 series graphics card and Windows XP?I was running Windows 7 but for various reasons I decided to go back to XP for a little while (until I get my solid state drive...)I installed everything including the latest drivers for everything (catalyst 10.2 for the 5850) and did all Windows Updates etc. I'm getting graphical glitches in FSX now. Untextured squares appearing in the terrain, parts of my AC's model disappearing at random, etc. Definitely didn't get these problems in 7.I read a few months ago when the 5800 series was new that the XP drivers were buggy, and I guess that may be the case, but hopefully someone here might have a suggestion for me before I go through the hassle of wiping the drive and going back to 7 or even Vista. Thanks in advance! edit: Screenshot to show some of the problem:
March 13, 201016 yr The only way to know for sure if it's software or hardware would be to reinstall Windows 7 (perhaps on another drive or partition so you keep your XP install intact) or to try the card in another system.
March 13, 201016 yr Author I put 7 back on and the problem is gone. It appears to be a driver issues with 5xxx ATI cards and their Windows XP drivers. I found another thread on a different forum with someone using a 5770 and XP and was having the exact same problems as me.Oh well, after getting used to Windows 7 over the past few months, I could tell right away the huge improvements they have made since XP, so no big deal going back to 7 (aside from the terrible Creative Labs drivers :( )

I dual boot Vista 64 bit and XP (XP for FS9, mainly, since it's too quirky under Vista 64), so I simply migrated my FSX installation to Vista and the problem disappeared. It's definitely a driver issue--I actually get better frame rates in Vista than I do in XP for most of my games, which doesn't fit with convention (normally it's the inverse). I know XP is awfully dated now, but it's still disappointing that ATI's XP drivers are so poor. A great aircraft is useless without a great pilot; accordingly, great hardware is useless without great drivers. :) I'm a bit tempted to take this 5770 back and exchange it for a GTX 275...though I may just hold out until Catalyst 10.3 is released.
