on Terrascene 2.1

Hey Guys:I started a project recently, and while verifying some of the the phases that I have to go through I found that terrascene didn't have information on the airport I would be working on, I tried to open some of the files (with extension .dat) found in the map folder but got nowhere, does anyone know if it is possible to edit those files, (the ones containing information regarding the visible map), there seem to be some files that appear to be shapefiles, or their name at least suggest that, but cant not be open by the program I tried.the location to the files is either /MAP for the .dat files or MAP/LOWRES, MAP/MEDRESAny help will be greatly appreciated.Daniel

Hi, I am not sure that you want to open the .dat file if you wish to change any airport data. I believe the .dat file is mostly machine language created by TRI to access/manipulate the data in the associated .pod file. If you look in the 'System' folder you will for example see the 'airport.pod' file and the 'airport.dat' file. The pod file can be accessed with 'volEdit' by ROTW and may help. I have not worked with the map folder myself, and do not have the maps installed .... I have never used them. If you wish to see what the .dat file has in it ... use Excel. I hope this helps.Cheers, Brian.

Hi BrianI dont think Terrascene 2.1 has a system folder, but i will check again tonight when I get there, remember I want to alter the data displayed on the terrascene program, not the one on fly 2.Thanks for your help

Is the airport in question you wish to work on in Fly! II itself? Out of curiosity, which airport are you attempting to do? TerraScene should be pulling airport information from within Fly! II's database. Let me know the airport identifier and I will see if it shows up in my setup for TS2.1. :( Best regards,

Hi ken: Thanks for coming back so promptly, Im not sure Terrascene imports that info from fly! II, I have been working on a second project for the best part of a year now, and there are 2 airports within that scenery, but only one is ever displayed on terrascene (though both are flyable on fly! II)The airport I'm working on is SPZA (Maria Reiche Neuman Airport), near the famous Nazca desert in PeruThanks

OK - The Globe tile in question is 202,117 (SE corner). This would be the box north of San Juan, and you really do not need the airport itself to render TerraScene imagery. You would just need to obtain and manually install the shapefiles / DEMs / LULC and / or DLG datafiles into the manual areas, then assign the textures to the data as you wish. What I did is go to the airport in Fly! II and then enter the editor (CTRL-E). The box in the lower right corner provided me with the Globe Tile information. Then I went into TerraScene and located the proper globe tile, and narrowed it to the SE quarter tile area. The manual has a good tutorial for manually entering and assigning textures for a project such as this. I believe Fonchy put up a tutorial in the library for using satelllite imagery and sllicing that with TerraScene - but it is also an involved method. The above is making the assumption you are wanting to create scenery area and not wishing to build up the airport itself. Hence there is no real need for the airport itself to be showing in TerraScene. One just needs the globe tile / latitude/longitude information to render the correct area. Hope this helps! Cheers!

Hi Ken:Thanks so much for the info.I knew I could input all of my info into the terrascene by means of lat/lon coordinates, however when one works in a long project, it helps a lot to be able to graphically see the area worked on the map (all I get right now in terrascene is a blank square with no references names nearby), that was my reason to update the info in TS, besides is much easier to tell the TS to work, say 15 or 18 miles around the airport area, than to keep adjusting input whenever one expands the original boundaries.Since the display in TS seems to works off shapefiles, I was hopeful there would be a way to easily edit it, so one could add also the names of cities and so on, once again, its just the practicality of having markers for guidance. Thanks Daniel

Hi Daniel,Very true. I guess Todd did not think of allowing end users that ability when he originally designed the program. Would be a nice feature, though. Wondering if one could use the airport pod file(s) and somehow recompile the airport.dat file for TS2.1? Maybe Laurent or one of the other ROTW members (who - along with Chris Wallace - have the most knowledge in something of this nature) might be able to come up with an idea on that??? Randall R. has terrific knowledge of TS2, but I cannot say if he would have any idea of how to go about amending a .dat file along the lines of this particular discussion. One can only hope. And, my apologies if I explained things which you were already aware of!!Cheers!
