A question regarding Resolution settings

Featured Replies

Being old I get easily confused so forgive me if the question is a bit basic !I would greatly appreciate a simple explanation as to what I see when I set resolutions.I run at 1920 x 1200 on the monitor, I have 2048 HiRes REX clouds and my FSX.cfg is at 1024. If I set the cfg to 2048 or 4096 am I getting the whole picture in 2048/4096 or ONLY the parts of a scenery where there is actually 2048/4096 resolution areas (like runway options in ORBX Aero for example)Thanks for your patience !

When you set the cfg to 4096 (for example) you will see everything that actually has a resolution of 4096 (like the clouds) in that higher res (meaning more detail): the rest of FSX is still in default 1024 res. But this won't be obvious: it's not that you can clearly see the clouds are a higher res than the rest: they just have more detail than if you would use 1024. In the end everything is translated to your monitor resolution and you get a complete nice picture. The resolution of the monitor doesn't really play a part in this all: on a small monitor with a lower resolution you would still see more detail in objects that have a higher res.

Thanks Jeroen, that is what I thought. I can see then that if you have the 4096 REX clouds and you experience heavy weather conditions using like ActiveSkyEvolution then you will be putting a potential strain on your GPU......correct?

Correct, although I've heard the fps won't drop as much as you would expect with those higher res clouds. I don't use high res clouds though, so I don't have any experience with them...

The resolution of your monitor and the resolution of the clouds are two completely seperate unrelated things. The resolution of your monitor is the number of pixels (the tiny coloured squares that make up the the screen) that are being displayed. The resolution of the clouds is how detailed the pictures that make up the clouds are are. The higher the cloud resolution the closer that you will be able to get to them without the getting blurry.

Its not just the resolution of the clouds, some sceneries, 3d objects and aircraft have all taken advantage of HD textures.

jjaycee1, just be SURE to use the DXT5 option for clouds when using higher resolution in the REX Options Manager. If not, you will most definitely see an impact on fps.

Many thanks to all who gave me advice on this.Yes I do use the DXT5 option in REX.I am aware of hi-res/HD textures for clouds and some repaints of aircraft but was not aware that some 3D buildings also enjoy this aspect. Can you tell me if this is with some specific add-on or "in general" with most scenery add-ons that use 3D buildings?
