Win 7 - "Address Bar" Tip

Featured Replies

In XP, when you navigated to a folder and or file on your HD, the complete path to that folder or file was displayed in the address bar of the navigation screen. The complete path was easy to copy and paste into a file or even into a post in a forum. This was very useful when advising someone where a particular file might be found on an FS setup. In Win 7 you do get a "address bar" when navigating, but the path is dis-jointed and connected by arrows. This "path" cannot be copied. However, if you Right click, just to the Right of the displayed path, you will get a drop down menu which does allow the path to be copied (as text) to the clipboard and then pasted into whatever document you decide to use. This works just as well as the XP method.Attached are two screenshots illustrating the FS2004 address bar and the Win 7 bar with the dropdown menu. I understand screenshots are purged after a week or so - so that is why I provided a somewhat detailed explanation of the procedure.Hope this info is useful.

You use a more complicated method. Easier: Simply click in the address bar (on a free area and not on a part of the displayed file path), and the "fixed" bar converts to a normal text field with the full path in it (the result is the same as if you were working with Windows XP). You can then use the standard text selection options as well as ctrl-c/ctrl-v. The address bar was changed in Vista and is present in Windows 7 as well.Andreas

Right you are - I had just tried a Right Click (did not experiment with a Left click) in that area.Thanks. I am always happy to learn more about Win 7.
