Vectored at too high an altitude

On a flight from Newcastle (EGNT) to Oslo airport (ENGM) I was assigned rwy 19R and given a 4000 ft altitude. I noted on the GPS that as I approached the end of the feathers for rwy 01R my rwy assignment suddenly changed to 01R. At that point I was too high for the distance from the rwy so I turned onto the 01R rwy heading and declared a missed approach. Aside from the fact that the vectoring seemed rather wrong would it have made more sense to request my origianal 19R assignment. I do not recall whether I had a menu item to make a rwy request. What I had expected was to be taken past 01R and around for the 19R approach so I was taken by surprise when the rwy assignment suddenly changed.

I am not sure at what point RC freezes your runway assignment. What might have happened is that during your initial approach assignment AI were landing on 19R or no AI were present and RC applied its usual priority selection for best runway. Then an AI shows up for 01L and RC reassigns that for you to avoid a 180 degree conflict.Once on approach Option 5 Req Runway is available for change but it might not be available once you are as close as you indicate. When you declared a missed approach you were then kept with 01L, correct? If you had requested 19R RC would have kept you in the current pattern and granted it but you then would have been risking a runway traffic conflict.Your missed approach call was the best resolution with this version since you could not complete landing on the new assignment.If your aircraft has a TCAS display use it to keep an eye on AI traffic. It can aid in your decision.
