May 10, 201016 yr I have used Fs Terrain for some years but I am thinking of going over to FS Global in FS9. Just wondering has FSG 2010 any impact on Frame rates and does it cover the whole world?Best Wishes and thank you,Chris EGBB
May 11, 201016 yr Hi Chris,I have FSGlobal & I'm quite happy with it but I'm thinking of trying FSGenesis instead for a variety of reasons:FSGlobal has occasional point errors which can cause some interesting artefacts, visible from a long way over the horizon. There are no inbuilt local mesh-corrections adjacent to MS airports. This can put MS airports on small, tall plateaux, or in deep trenches, where MS got the field elevations wrong.FSGlobal mesh is slightly offset from the MS land-water-mask, which puts extra flat land on one side of islands / continents and can put big cliffs on the opposite side. The coverage is up to about 60 or 70 degrees N and S (62 off the top of my head), as it's based on Shuttle data. The data is inaccurate, erratic or possibly absent at higher latitudes so coverage is only for 60S to 60N (70S to 70N?).On the whole though I do like it: the odd errors are outweighed by the accuracy & detail of the topography. I'm on a lunch break at work at the mo', I'll get a couple of screenshots together tonight and upload tomorrow to illustrate what I've written above.Regards,Daveedit: I have FSG 2008, the errors I mention may have been ironed out in FSG 2010. As I understand things, mesh shouldn't affect FPS anyway.
May 12, 201016 yr To build on the part about FSGenesis you can get 38m mesh for free for all of the United States from FSGenesis if you look in the library and this is far superior to FS Global but as I said before it only covers the United States. For areas such as Europe where most mesh is only available in different sets for each country FS Global provides one single unified mesh with a minimum resolution of 76m and should be much better in highly popular areas (Alps maybe?) CheersAlex
May 12, 201016 yr Hi,Global '08 has some higher res areas, Alps & US I think, but, yes, the rest is pretty well all 76m. It would be nice to think the hi-res coverage is extended in 2010.Some pics, then...The odd extra zero in the elevation data does this. It's the only one I've found so far, near Roraima on the Venezuelan border. I suppose there are a few more. Sort of pretty from a distance! This is Brava, the SW island of Cape Verde. Shows the coastal mismatch quite well.MS have the wrong elevation for a lot of ground but airports don't follow new mesh. This is Raga (name not ICAO) in centralish Africa, FSG first, MS second. I suppose field elevation is coded into the airport itself and is inviolable. It is possible to add a local mesh of your own to raise the surrounding terrain but I haven't looked into it yet.My home patch- Snowdonia, shows the good side of FSGlobal. The first is FSG, the second MS mesh. The frame rate (37 ish) is about the same with MS mesh as it is with the detailed FSGlobal 2008.It would be nice if someone could post similar screenies for Global 2010, and maybe for Genesis too.Regards,D
May 12, 201016 yr Author Hi Dave, Hi Alex,Many thanks for your replies which have been very helpful. I have decided to purchase FS Global 2010 and see how I get on.Best Regards,Chris
May 14, 201016 yr Be sure to read the docs that come with it. As I understand it, an airport elevation correction utility is included. Since FSG 2008 north-south lattitudes have been extended, more so in FS202 0 (I have 2008.).As always, check their site for patches as they do release them.Let us know about these things. Hi Dave, Hi Alex,Many thanks for your replies which have been very helpful. I have decided to purchase FS Global 2010 and see how I get on.Best Regards,Chris
