Help Needed with Repainting Carenados for FSX

Featured Replies

Hi,I have Adobe PS and know how to actually repaint the Carenado panels but I still need some tips! What format do I save the layered PS files in? BMP? When I do this, the aircraft looks like it's been burned when I load it into FSX... Should I be saving in a different format? Are there any easy ways to get stripes etc. to line up across multiple aircraft panels other than just trial and error? Is there a quick way to recolour the whole aircraft panel? The default repaint panels are all white fuselage...Hope someone can help :( G

Before using them in the sim, they will need to be saved as dds files (with alpha), either using the dds plugin or dxt2bmp.I save them as psd, then targa, then load them into dxt2bmp, flip, and save.

If you don't have a good paintkit, that is difficult. For the BA609, I've used FS Repaint V2 to fine tune anything that I can't line up in the paint kit itself. It isn't as good as what could be done with layers in a well designed paint kit, but so be it.

The easiest way to recolour something in PS if you don't have a paint kit which can easily isolate something, is to do this:Select the bit you want to recolour, either with the magic wand or quick select tool, or the lasso tool, or if you want to be more precise, with the pen tool and then convert your path into a selection via the path palette.Whatever method you use to get the area selected, then go up to the Image menu, choose the 'Adjustments' option and then 'Replace Color' from the pop out menu. You will then have three eyedropper tools on a pop up window, one creates a selected area in white, the other adds to the selection, and the third one subtracts from it. The object here is to make everything you want to recolour appear white in the pop up window. You can use the 'Fuzziness' slider to assist you with that (it basically works on the same principle as the tolerance setting for the Magic Wand tool). When what you wanted to recolour appears white in the preview box, you can either use the sliders on that pop up to change the colour of that area, or click on the colour swatch and it will let you use the PS Color Picker to choose a specific colour. You may want to then back the saturation off a bit with the slider, since that method tends to make colours a bit garish.Al

Thanks for the replies, Gents.I'm still a bit confused about the file types (noob!). All the texture files in the Carenado aircraft folders seem to be .bmp. So... I have to edit them in Photoshop, convert them to .dds and then save them back to the Carenado texture folders? Do I replace the original .bmps with the new .dds? If anyone has the answers and can spell it out for me, that'd be great... Also, I'm having problems finding a dds plugin for PS or DXT2BMP... can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks Again...G
